Talk:Wikipedia Welcomes Medical Students
Thanks for setting this up
editIt is challenging to plan for outreach to universities and medical schools. When anyone has written guides in the past, the best ideas they had seemed outdated within a year. After seeing guides change every year since 2011 I hesitate to write more rules now.
However, this page is currently simple enough to be a good start for anyone. I like that it does not go into too much detail, which can be distracting. What is written here now all sounds good, and I think it will all be good to share for some years.
At en:Category:WikiProject Medicine meetups there are some event pages for Wikipedia programs for medical students at various schools. While those event pages hardly have any instructions, they do so a history of doing outreach to medical students. I would like to see more of that outreach happen in the future. - Thanks Bluerasberry for your response. The mentioned category is indeed of great significance in this context. However, I intend to put together the materials that have been already put in place. I have already included a couple of presentations prepared by James and Thomas. I am certain there are others of the kind prepared by ones who have presented at the events included in en:Category:WikiProject Medicine meetups. Putting them together would prepare a prototype that Wikipedians can even use at their own institutes to motivate and involve more contributors. I doubt if the materials would go out of date very rapidly. Even if some portions become out of date, updating the relevant sections should be a piece of cake. I need your cooperation. I would also appreciate if you could involve others who could have a role to play. DiptanshuTalk 17:19, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- Bluerasberry could you discuss with the organizers and arrange to make the password protected videos of en:W:Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/AMSA - Wikipedia collaboration/AMSA wiki class open for non-participants? I think that the materials could be of wide implication. DiptanshuTalk 17:26, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Diptanshu.D: I am not ready to make a commitment to organize materials right now. Also, I cannot share any of the previous tutorial videos I recorded, because those included students who wanted the class conversation to be private. I am planning to make a new set of tutorial videos, but I cannot say when I will do that or be finished.
- I know other people who would oversee parts of this but not anyone who has labor to share at this time.
- The Programs and Events Dashboard has a medical training. I think that organizers should see this but I cannot recommend it to students except when they also have some wiki support from elsewhere.
- Let me think for a while about this and see what I can do. Are you at Wikimania? Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:07, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Bluerasberry: I understand that you cannot make commitments at the moment. No issues at all. But keep the issue in mind and if possible help in preparing a new set of tutorial videos. Another thing that you could do is to reach out to the right persons who could help in getting things done. My expertise is nowhere near yours and neither is my reach.
- Unfortunately my scholarship request for Wikimania was not granted and my personal budget did not allow for the program. DiptanshuTalk 14:45, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
