2004

  • Status update: mav 01:12, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
We should be at 500,000 articles on Monday 23 February! All languages are encouraged to finish their versions of the press release and distribute them sometime during or after Monday 23 February. The English Wikipedia press release will probably be distributed on Wednesday 25 February.

Mav announced/ proposed on wikipedia-l mailinglist that we prepare for the approaching 500,000 article milestone[1]. We will most probably reach there within this month. The article count is based on this page: en:Wikipedia:Multilingual statistics

Because the new server was delayed we mised the 1/3 of a million milestone and now are waiting for the much better 500,000 milestone (sometime early next year). Donations thus far have paid for a new database server and we already have more traffic than we can handle. See here

We have missed the 300,000 milestone, so the new milestone is 1/3 of a million (based on count here).
I think that one too will be old news, why not take things on the chin and go for 400 000 and the new monster Database server? -- Cimon Avaro on a pogostick
Another delay of the official release date. One of our servers are dead and needs to be fixed. The other still needs to be upgraded. Jimbo Wales wants to wait one week after everything is fixed before we officially distribute the press release. We simply cannot handle the extra traffic until then. This will make the 300,000 figure old news by then, but the 1/3 million milestone will be fresh news. Some changes will be needed in the press release. [2]

Official release date postponed until two days after server upgrades can be installed. You may still distribute your version of the press release, but we will be down for an unknown amount of time in order to install the upgrades and the servers will be slow before then.
wait a second Mav. You can't just postpone the release on the date it was planned. Your 30th is my 1rst. I last checked yesterday just before going to bed, and it was not mentionned it was postponed again. I looked on the ml as well, and nothing was mentionned. I saw no information either about the day it the upgrades were likely to happen, and it seems obvious to me to logo won't be ready before weeks. Well, I sent one :-( ant
Note the wording "official" and the mention that you could distribute the press release if you wanted. I just suggest that that isn't the best idea right now. --mav

Timetable: Non-English press release distribution is tentatively set for Monday 29 September. English version will follow one week later in order to smooth out server load.

Our MediaWiki Wikipedia count should hit 300,000 sometime between September 25-October 1. The meta version of the press release in English will be frozen to non-minor edits on September 18 at 20:00 UTC.

As reported by Anthere citing mav as a source at here, the date we reach the 300,000th article is may be around 2 to 3 weeks from now.

The main press release is now open only for minor edits. The English version of the release will probably be frozen on September 1st. The 300,000 article milestone is expected to be reached some time in the first week of September, so the provisional release date is Monday, September 8th.
This page only contains provisional, proposed dates for now, neither authors nor people in charge with Wikimedia have endorsed the dates mentioned above.
