Talk:Wikimania 2012/Bids/Stellenbosch
Getting the bid properly on its way
editHi all, let's put our heads together and see what can be done to make this a great Wikimania, and what needs to be done to make it happen. --Slashme 16:41, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Dates
editPlease clarify the date thought we agreed on September not July? --Charlene, by mail
- The change came about because the Official requirements for bidding cities says "Dates should be from the beginning of July to mid August and should include a weekend." --Slashme 12:46, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- We also decided on this date because during this time it will be the holidays, which will make facilities such as the hostels available for accommodation. In addition to this I will be able to literally contribute 24/7 because I will have no other obligations during this time. LouriePieterse 13:28, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Campus map
editIs it possible to get a site map of the campus (lecture halls, breakaway facilities, accomodation, catering and cleaning). --Charlene; by email.
- The coverage is excellent on Openstreetmap. I'll be happy to make a map from that with specific places pointed out. --Slashme 12:42, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I would have liked to help David, but don't know in which way. :) LouriePieterse 13:31, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I can handle the map stuff, as long as I get info on which places to highlight. I think some of that will only come once we know which halls we will be using and where the people will be staying. --Slashme 15:30, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Train travel
editFrom Stellenbosch, there's a reliable commuter train service to Cape Town and back for ZAR 26 = USD 3.69 (and also, if you want a great experience, there's the line that runs along the beach to Simonstown. Absolutely beautiful: Image Article). It costs only ZAR 32 = USD 4.53 for a 1st class return ticket. --Slashme 05:22, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Travel and transportation
editThe section for Travel and transportation will need to be more carefully thought through if we are going to push for the South African bid. The estimates are very high - eg R 11,000.00 from Europe we could probably bring this down quite substantially with more detailed queries with travel agents which I will look into.Kaydee 68 08:28, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- The 2010 Fifa world cup had more than 8 times as much greenhouse gas emissions as the previous one in Germany because of all the long distance international flights to South Africa (flights made up over 67% of the CO2e while stadia constructions and material was less than 1%)[1]. Carbon offsets are pretty much just indulgences. -- Jeandré, 2011-02-01t03:31z
- Air travel is a reality of contemporary movement and migration. It would be better to go by ship but that isn't practical. Carbon offsets are certainly indulgences, but more effective than flagellation. Kaydee 68 08:02, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Human trafficking is a reality of, and large part of, contemporary economic systems. The pain and suffering from the torture and slaughter of trillions of fish each year, and the enslavement, torture, and slaughter of tens of billions of mammals and birds each year is a reality of the choices of contemporary food consumers. That doesn't mean the chapter should help make these things worse either. -- Jeandré, 2011-02-12t07:35z
- "Human trafficking" may not be the term that you really want. Eclecticology 02:53, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

- As one who would be coming from Vancouver it would be much cheaper to route through London. Those coming from Mexico City or Caracas would do better through Sao Paulo. Eclecticology 02:53, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Stellenbosch article on en
editStellenbosch needs to be improved to at least a B-Class quality rating in support of this bid. --NJR ZA 05:39, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Good point!!! I'll work on that over the Weekend. --Slashme 09:54, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Definitely important. I think that we should decide sometime on all of the related articles and try to get them in order. People usually say that it is not "trustworthy" to judge a place by its Wikipedia page, but I am almost dead sure the judges will first take a look at them! LouriePieterse 13:38, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't get around to it this weekend... Hopefully some time during the week. --Slashme 09:58, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've sent a message to the STB municipality through their web-form asking for their Marketing dept. to contact me about improving the Wikipedia page. --Slashme 10:35, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Other events
editWe should list other events scheduled to take place in Stellenbosch during the same time and see how it may conflict with or support the wikimania bid:
- The XVIth World Economic History Congress - Stellenbosch, South Africa, 9-13 July 2012
--NJR ZA 05:52, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- This is a very important point. Bid team: which of us should contact the University and Stellenbosch Tourism and Stellenbosch Municipality to find out about feasibility? What do we have to find out before initiating contact? --Slashme 09:58, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Could we get the contact details for the Chancellor/vice of the University as well as tourism and municipality. Happy to make the initial contact with help from Lourie who is on site. Charlene
- I will talk with the people at the university, because I know the Dean of Science very well. He is always happy to hear of events such as this. I will arrange to meet him as soon as possible in person. This is not the type of thing to do over email, especially if we want as much as possible support from them. He will then be able to tell me who to see and he will help me to get appointments quickly. You are welcome to contact the tourism office and municipality Charlene. I have added links to their websites. LouriePieterse 13:45, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Contact details noted Lourie and will make phone contact in the new week. Thanks for the heads up on the dates and since it is July we could look at a Wikimania Madiba Day contribution --Charlene 15:45, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Good point! --Slashme 20:07, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Cape Town 2008 bid
editWikimania_2008/Bids/Cape_Town has lots of usable material.
Stellenbosch or Cape Town?
editCape Town | Stellenbosch |
---|---|
Central location: close to airport and many tourist locations | Daily train service connecting STB and CT |
Higher Brand recognition | Lower brand recognition, but not none. |
Availability of accommodation TBA | Availability of accommodation likely to be good. |
No-one on the bid committee (except maybe Ian? I don't know...) has strong ties with CT university*, probably fixable? Surely we could find some Ikeys who care about Wikipedia? | Lourie has good contacts here and will be present and able to help around the conference time. |
Easy to create international buzz and attraction of coming to universally accepted beautiful Southern city Cape Town | Perhaps less well-known (internationally) and less compelling to make the long trip for those coming from the North? |
Logisitics and coordination easier to accomplish with service providers who are experienced and geared-up for large international event | Given that conference organisation is not their primary activity, universities can be more difficult to deal with in terms of logistics and coordination; more legwork and micro-management required from host team. |
- There are some relationships with Uni of Cape Town people who attended the local ZA chapter workshop; incl. lecturers, fellows and students. (However, that being said, and being devil's advocate, a relationship with Stellenbosch University doesn't necessarily require that the conference itself is hosted at the University. There isn't really a pre-condition for sponsors and partners to be located in the jurisdiction where an event is hosted.) Kaydee 68 08:21, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
University of Stellenbosch
editI am a student at the University and this is the first that I am hearing of this, the student body is very proud of Stellenbosch, there needs to be advertisment and disscussion aimed at the student body as I feel they could be an asset in the bid, maby someone from the commitee can contact the student paper and see if they will do an atricle on it. --Scottykira 12:52, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Scottykira. I am also a student at Stellenbosch University. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping us. Thanks in advance! LouriePieterse 12:18, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I will take some photos over the coming week of the campus so that we can improve the page, The DC page is looking far better than ours. We must also play on it being in Africa as this is an area that can greatly benifit wrom wikipedia as a result of their being a lack of books as sources across Africa--Scottykira 13:05, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Bid activity
editHeya guys, im checking on the bids and it would be good to know what work is going on off wiki or elsewhere.
Many Thanks
Q&A
editThe Q&A stage of bidding has started and your question and answer page can be found here. Questions will be appearing on this page soon. You have until April 5th to answer them. Good luck and looking forward to reading the responses. Seddon 22:52, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Venue possibility
editAlso conveniently situated in the center of the campus is the University Conservatory which houses the 550-seat Endler Concert Hall, the 200-seat Fismer Concert Hall and the 180-seat Jannasch Lecture Hall as well as two 60-seat lecture halls and the beautiful, contemporary Behrens Foyer outside the Endler Hall which can easily accommodate 300 people. All of these venues have full audio-visual facilities. 41.7.83.88 21:20, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
