What?

edit

This project doesn't seem to have aim other than being for children. "[A] comprehensive (containing facts, links to files, definitions, etc.) wiki directed toward young audiences" is far too wide for a Wikimedia project.

Children are as differing and varied as adults are so one project couldn't possible suffice more than Wikipedia suffices at the moment. WikiJunior at WikiBooks is aimed at creating books for children.

"No profanity or explicit images" - where would you draw the line? If there is an article on the penis, then a diagram or picture would be appropriate to illustrate. --Oldak Quill 16:58, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikijunior vs Wikichildren

edit

As you said at the end, I am confused. :) I can't see any significant difference between Wikijunior and Wikichildren, espacially on the content part. Could you explain more the main goal of this project, which makes it different than others? --Özgür 19:13, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Adult vs. child accounts?

edit

How could we know that holders of adult accounts are in fact, adults(or for that matter, that the "children" are actully children and not sockpuppets of adullt account holders?) Also, since this is targeted for children, and the Wikipedia Foundation is based in the United States, we might need to be concerned with the Wikipedia: Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

What is the actual content that will be on this project?

edit

How is this project going to be distinguished from other Wikimedia projects in terms of content? So far this seems like a very abortive duplication of Wikijunior, and needless duplication of efforts. If you are looking for creating a project that is explicitly "censoring content for the protection of minors", I guess you have something there, but it really doesn't get distinguished from Wikijunior as Wikijunior pretty much has the same policy in terms of completed content.

Even then, I don't know how you are going to stop vandals from throwing up blatant pornography like the w:goatse picture getting plastered on a major page. This isn't new, and has already happened with Wikijunior content (quickly reverted, but that is besides the point).

From my perspective, I don't think that kids and open public wikis are really that compatable. If you do want to create a wiki for kids to use, it should be on some dedicated LAN structure such as something within a school where the account access can be very tightly controlled and the content is not even really viewable except from within the school. That would also allow more room for experimentation, which would be the whole point of the exercise. It doesn't make sense for kids to be able to edit their homework problems or to create a textbook on a site dedicated exclusively to kids and their parents.

Also, the whole purpose of the "child accounts" doesn't make much sense to me either. Either you trust the kids to be able to edit and modify the content, or you don't. The point of blocking kids from using talk pages is meaningless as a talk page and content pages are really just the same thing. MediaWiki just links the two together for convience, not because you can't have discussion on project pages (which sometimes happens even on Wikimedia projects). I guess presumably this would protect children from pedophilles, but you have many other issues here if you allow adults and kids to mix in any way. And as has been said above, there is no legitimate means to distinguish between adults and kids anyway, unless you personally (as the project founder, not necessarily even being an admin) know precisely who they are when they are creating accounts. Even then, you don't know if the account has been hacked into and it is not the person who they claim to be.

I just don't see this proposal going much of anywhere unless these issues are strongly dealt with. --Roberth 12:56, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikichildren/Wikikids

edit

I like the idea, and we had quite the same on the french wikipedia. I think that it must be done, and that the issues written can be ansewred. I just need to know where it should be discussed in order to be made, either here or on the similar project : Wikikids. This project seems to be a bit more active, so people here should comme and see it. Astirmays 21:03, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

They should be just one, but one at least project about a wiki encyclopedia for children. I made an alternative proposal for Wikikids, and I invite you to have a look to it. Only this Wikichildren project is on the page Proposals for new projects yet. Should we remove it and put wikikids instead ? Astirmays 22:38, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
