Translation English French

Hi, I start a post about translation English French following a exchange of email with Martin Domdey. Here is the contain of my last email :

An idea for a good standard or commune translation could be checking google and deepl translation. From this sentence : « Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment. » Google give : « Imaginez un monde dans lequel chaque être humain puisse partager librement la somme de toutes les connaissances. C'est notre engagement. » Deepl: « Imaginez un monde dans lequel chaque être humain peut librement partager la somme de toutes les connaissances. C'est notre engagement. » Both translations are the same and look for me much closer to the original text in English than what is displaying on the web site right now. The verb « share » is translated in French by the word « partager ». In my perspective, using an other word will always change a little bit the meaning of the French translation. For instance, translate « share in the sum » by « prendre part à l'intégralité » produce a sentence not very commune in French and sound strange for me, when the sentence « prendre part à l'intégralité des connaissances » should probably exist only on Wikimedia sphere.

My proposition is to keep the translation produce both by Google and Deepl and just change « Imaginez » by « Imagine » to make the message more freindly. Lionel Scheepmans ^{✉ Contact} _{French native speaker, sorry for my dysorthography} 11:28, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Finally, Martin tel me than the foundation took the Google translation. It should soon be updated on their web site. Il y a une différence entre "share" et "share in" ; c'est une distinction qui est subtile et que les moteurs de traduction automatique ne font en général pas. "Share" est effectivement traduit par "partager", mais "share in" est un verbe idiomatique à particule, et la particule est importante. Elle change le verbe, qui prend un sens plus proche de "prendre part" . Voir par exemple : If you share in something such as a success or a responsibility, you are one of a number of people who achieve or accept it. ou encore If everyone shares in the work, we'll be finished cleaning the house in an hour or two.. Il y a une connotation participative dans "share in" qui n'est pas présente dans "partager". C'est une connotation qui, si je me rappelle bien, fut un choix délibéré lors de l'adoption de la vision du mouvement il y a bien longtemps. Utiliser "partager", c'est perdre cette connotation. Une traduction automatique mot-à-mot perd en subtilité et richesse.

Je ne vais pas aller dans les détails concernant "somme" ou "intégralité". "Somme" est, encore une fois, une traduction mot-à-mot, et ce mot est à ma connaissance utilisé en français moins fréquemment qu'un mot plus courant comme "intégralité" (en dehors du champ des mathématiques, bien sûr). Salut Guillaume (WMF), pour ma part j'avais réagit par rapport au site de la fondation qui utilisait le verbe share par le verbe puiser, ce qui perdait tout son sens. Maintenant pendre part à est une formule intéressante mais s'accorde mal avec « la somme ». Prendre par à la somme cela n'a pas beaucoup de sens. On peut prendre part à la construction et au partage de la somme, mais à la somme elle même c'est bizarre. On peut maintenant prendre part à l'intégralité d'une activité mais à l'intégralité des connaissances humaines, Ca sonne aussi vraiment bizarre. Au finale, je plaiderais alors plutôt pour la formule :

Imaginez un monde où chaque être humain peut librement prendre part au partage et à la création de l'intégralité des connaissances humaines.

ou

Imaginez un monde où chaque être humain peut librement prendre part au partage et à la création de la somme des connaissances humaines.

Ok Guillaume (WMF), so Martin fixed the translation probably in regard of WMFoudation decision. As I tell him by email : The translation will probably not be the best for all points of view, but it seems to me to be a good compromise.
