IP-range blocking
editDear Masti, this year we discussed about your policy on IP range blocking. As I wrote, I understand that some IP ranges or IPs are blocked because of vandalism. However, I think that the ranges are really large. For example, in my case all IP from the OVH, that is also an Internet provider were blocked. I think it is really not a good policy to not allow IP to contribute. Do you plan to modify this policy in order to be less large? I ask you this question but it may apply for all stewards because it is maybe a global policy. If so, I would be interested to get the point of view of other stewards. - IPs are the very important part of Wikimedia comunity. So the range blocks should be as narrow as possible. Unfortunately some providers are not interested in fighting spam and vandalism coming from their networks. OVH is one of them. The blocks are to protect Wikipedia from vandalisms and also allow admins and stewards to concentrate on important things instead of running behind vandals changing proxies. If you look in the block history for this range you will see how much work has been put to watch the vandals coming. masti <talk> 15:20, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Masti thanks for your answer. I still continue to think that a lot of "good faith" IP are block by such a large IP-range blocking. There is indeed vandalism in this IP-range but how many contribution have we lost because of this blocking? We will never know. What do you mean by "some providers are not interested in fighting spam and vandalism coming from their networks". What do the providers that help to "fight spam and vandalism"? What is the difference with OVH? With other providers, are there some actions against vandals? Pamputt (talk) 18:20, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Some providers are actively preventing or discouraging using their networks as open proxies or for spam activites more than others. Some do not want to be associated with such activities. Some do not care. masti <talk> 22:02, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
