Related Research Communities
editTo the extent that your work includes wiki research, the en:Wiki Symposium provides another community interested in your work as well providing work you may be interested in. The Wiki Symposium is about wiki research and practice in general, not just on WikiMedia projects. Feel free to move this paragraph to a better suited place. Dirk Riehle 14:31, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- The Wiki Symposium sounds very interesting. I believe one of the grad students who helped initiate the discussions on this page will be attending. While I can't make it this year, I hope to attend next year. Reswik 16:01, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Relevant Links
editHere are some links relevant to our 6th August discussion, includig some I didn't get the opportunity to talk about but which I personally find useful. It would be great if we could pool together our knowledge of useful wikimedia based projects and tools, and describe them on the WRN wiki.
- http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/General_User_Survey - this projects
needs just a 'little' support to become active!
- Wikidemia: the project dedicated to understanding English Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wikidemia
- Two very useful categories:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_statistics and http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Research
- http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Toolserver - the Toolserver contains
some useful tools, unfortunately they are rather poorly described. Among the tools that I have learned how to use and can therefore declare as functional and possible to use by not very tech savvy person:
- To analyzie statistical contributions of a single user:
- http://tools.wikimedia.de/~interiot/cgi-bin/count_edits
- http://tools.wikimedia.de/~interiot/cgi-bin/contribution_tree
- To get some statistics about an article (from any namespace):
- YurikBot and Query PHP:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Yurik/Query_API - great tool, almost no description for those not *very* computer savvy, unfortunately. If some of ours members understand how to use it, perhaps they could write a 'how-to' page for the rest of us?
- User Script project contains some quite useful scripts, unfortunately
again their description leaves much to be desired: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_User_scripts . Out of those I'd like to direct your attention to this statistical script: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Voice_of_All/UsefulJS#History_and_Edit_Summary_Use_Analysis_.28Requires_Addtab.29 This script gives some useful statistics about both a user and a page, and has some interesting features like differentiating between various types of edits (it has some others in addition to minor and normal, including the ability to spot reverts). Unlike most of the above tools, there is a tutorial for how to start using the scripts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_User_scripts/Tutorial
Ufff. If you know anything else, please let me know, and if you can create new tools or improve the existing ones, there is no better time then now :)

- Nichtich, Thanks for posting that email text by Piotrus. I'll check soon to see which of these can be added to the resources and projects mentioned on the Research page. Reswik 02:12, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks again, I've added a number of the above points to the "Research Tools" section of the Research page. Reswik 15:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Bibliography
editYou probably know http://bibliography.wikimedia.de. Do the categories fit your needs? I could not participate in Wikimania. Which of the many talks and papers at the event do you regard as scientific so I can include them? -- Nichtich 22:44, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I think more categories for social research might be needed than are included in the link you mention. Those might take some time to compile. As for Wikimania talks, there were five simultaneous presentation tracks, so it may take multiple comments to mention all the presentations. While there were many interesting presentations, several which I attended that could be listed, but which were structured more as theory explorations than as research reports were: Yochai Benkler "The Wealth of Nations" (a nice overview of his work), Rishab Gosh "200 years of collaborative ownership," and Joseph Reagle "Is the Wikipedia Neutral?" What has happened since?
editHi, I am also a grad student researching wikipedia from a somewhat philosophical perspective. Or is it STS? Anyway, I was wondering what happened after this page (seems from a year ago) because I would be interested in several of the the ideas - discuss things in advance, co-write, etc. I'll be going to WikiSym 2007. Maybe I'll meet some of you there?
