More pictures, clearer community focus
Meta is sometimes viewed as a 'coordination wiki' by people who mainly edit other wikis. I would say it's more of a community-wide wiki, with part for coordination, part for communication and news, part for outreach and new-project support. It has its own community around developing shared resources, defining roles and tools that can help all wikis, and keeping an eye on the overall mission of the foundation. [in particular, someone was asking why Meta had its own checkusers / whether stewards who were admins here could use stewards powers here]
Reviewing the 'requests for accounts on the WMFwiki' today I was wondering about finding better ways to maintain that site, or as Anthere suggested a while back, finding a cleaner way to merge it into Meta. I still think merging whatever isn't directly related to the office staff is a good idea. Looking at the evolving sidebar here, with its focus on news, communication, translation, a wikimedia forum, and events only encourages those thoughts.
To start addressing both issues, we could use better images and media from the projects here on this main page! And an update on featured cross-wiki projects as well... -- sj | help translate |+ 04:03, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think one image is enough. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 05:43, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- We could perhaps feature content from all the different projects in some way? Give their latest news? There are so many things that could be done with the main page. Majorly talk 14:34, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- That's a great idea. It is meta, after all... now if only there were a way to do this with transwiki templates... -- sj | help translate |+
Commons images
I think it would be nice if we put some images from Commons on the Main Page to showcase some free content. Thoughts? --MZMcBride 19:40, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Anyone? --MZMcBride 07:59, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Went ahead and implemented this. The queue: Template:File queue/2009 and the captions: Template:File captions/2009. Cheers. --MZMcBride 03:31, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, good idea. Was there a reason that a TURKEY was one of the first images? :) Are you just picking them or ? Maybe something that uses the featured picture stream, if that's automatable? ++Lar: t/c 16:36, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- I think having two Main Pages with the same image is kinda lame, personally. Meta can surely find some cool pictures of its own to use. I liked the turkey, for example, so I chose it for this week. :-) --MZMcBride 00:32, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
- Could always select from other wikis featured picture streams randomly (and never the same as the current week) if and when you get bored at picking... What's the protocol (format?) if others want to try? ++Lar: t/c 01:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
- I don't quite see the relevance, unless you can (automatically) showcase the featured pictures from other wikis, e.g. Commons this week, en-wiki next week, de-wiki the week after, etc. ...Aurora... 12:43, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

- Showcase the featured pictures, Good idea!--Shizhao 09:20, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
(indent)This needs to be maintained, I just added a random pic for week 8 - feel free to change for something better but leaving it empty doesn't look very good ;) Finn Rindahl 21:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Updating the Afr. main page
Hi, the Afrikaans main page (Tuisblad) contains a few language errors. The corrected version can be found at User:Anrie/Sandbox (the page itself is locked to regular users). If an admin or other able user could update it, I'd be very grateful. (User:Anrie/Sandbox can be deleted after te content has been copied.) Anrie 16:55, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Anrie, should be updated now, many thanks, hartlike groete, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Selected Commons file on main page
Much as I enjoy selecting images from Commons to be on the Meta front page, we should either find some regular system for choosing a file or abandon the concept of "selected Commons file". The last six weeks I've added a file based on my personal preferences, and even if I've added them one at the time and waited until saturday/sunday with adding a new one noone else has joined in. Finn Rindahl 23:19, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- This time noone added an image until monday (and then again added by me). If noone objects I'm removing "selected commons" file from the main page at the end of this week. Finn Rindahl 11:17, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. Personally (and this may sound like I'm being boring), I never thought this was particularly appropriate. Commons is just one of our projects, and Meta's main page shouldn't really be expending space like that. We're for documentation and co-ordination. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 11:31, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'd say go ahead. ...Aurora... 11:23, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Removed. If anyone feels this should be readded, an approved method for actually selecting images should be agreed upon first. Finn Rindahl 14:16, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

"latest news" or "notifications" ?
On 6 september 2007, "Latest News" was changed into "Notifications" : diff
I think I'd rather revert it back to "Latest News" or perhaps "Announcements". "Notifications" sounds a bit too bureaucratic and like some superior people are telling some inferior people some kinds of unpleasant things (like a deadline to pay a bill or something).
My biggest concern is that people should feel freeer to use this part of the page for more diverse kinds of announcements, without the fear of not having the authority to write here.
Closure of Incubator
Please move somewhere else if unappropiated, I didn't know where else to go. Some user created this: [1] . I don't know if he did it too, but the Incubator Wikipedia test pages are blocked. See for example : [2] Reads this:

How can a wiki be blocked if not proper discussion has been held? And it's the second time this month. Please help the Incubator community.--Fluence 20:22, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
- Nevermind; solved. Please remove these comments as needed.--Fluence 20:55, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Redesign
What about a little redesign? For example I would move the "Meta in many languages" box just to the bottom... We did so on Strategy wiki and no one complained... This is so yesterday, language detection thrugh browser or something automatical would be much more useful.--Kozuch 00:15, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- We're glad of being a multilingual wiki: I think that it's better to show it prominently. --Nemo 12:26, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
