Tools for that exist

1. On a file page, click "Page views in the past 30 days" in the left sidebar, then scroll to bottom, there is a link "Mediaviews Analysis on Toolforge" when you click it you can see the views stats. The views in "Page views in the past 30 days" apparently are only the views of the Commons file page. For categories, you can use the mvc tool to see views of files in the category (example). Since both of these things already exist what do you suggest should be done if this doesn't mean your wish is already implemented? Please add that to the wish.
2. Also the usually very low file views can be discouraging for contributors; on the other hand it may raise awareness of this issue.
3. This wish seems highly related (maybe mergable?): Community Wishlist/Wishes/Add view count to videos

Ups, it should say "On a file page, click Page information in the left sidebar, then scroll to bottom,…". Apparently I pasted the wrong thing. STei provided essentially the same info in the thread below but without this error and clearer.

I have just created several issues for the MVC tool (linked on the example) (MediaviewsInCategories): https://github.com/Ladsgroup/MediaviewsInCategories/issues The main problem with it probably is that it doesn't scan all files in a category but only up to 500.

As mentioned in the discussion of the similar wish, I think it needs some clarity and/or differentiation what counts as one or multiple video play(s) (I guess as you said it would also be helpful to track viewing duration). By the way one can also scan for the views of the Wikimedia pages that include files in a category (example). With 2. above I was referring to better evaluate the impact of the content we share on Wikimedia Commons as this could be very demotivating for uploaders, campaign organizers and campaign participants. Following up

@Ruby D-Brown, in addition to the other responses you have received, in case you are using the Vector 2022 skin or "user interface" like me, you can also locate the views by:

1. Visiting the Tools menu in the top right of the file/video page. You can use the 2024 Wikipedia video as an example. I have a screenshot here to help.

2. In Tools menu, you will find Page information. Click that and you'll arrive on the information page.

3. Access Page views in the past 30 days metric in the table under Basic Information

4. For more metrics and views over a longer period of time, please scroll to the bottom and click the link Mediaviews Analysis on Toolforge, you will land on a page with more analytics.
