Description

Might it not be a good idea if we used this page as a general descriptor as to what CentralNotices are, how they work? A guide to the CentralNotice admin? We could still have the current softredirects at the top, but it feels like there is more use for this page. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 01:52, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

We can do that after this confusion is done. Make a note to continue this discussion on May 4th. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 01:53, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I have no idea what you're talking about but may 4th was four months ago. תומר א. 17:58, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Move checks to the server

The way the current Vector-related notices are implemented is not very good. Notice (or even two) is loaded for every visitor on every project, then the browser has to compare wgDBname against a long list of projects and hide the notice if needed. Has anyone ever suggested to move this check into server? -AlexSm 15:59, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

VectorRollout_Ladybug_Dates template looks terrible

The VectorRollout_Ladybug_Dates template looks terrible. Issues:

  1. Date is using a bizarre format; really ought to use human-readable words
  2. The space between the first and second lines is awkward and unnecessary
  3. It's using CSS for the image for some unknown reason (to just make coding more difficult and obtuse?)
  4. The structure of the template uses two messages for the second line, making it read "Help us find bugs and complete user interface translations. (before 2010-08-25)"; this is just wrong, you can't do that with periods and parentheses
  5. The orange date is just too much

I made a few edits to fix the most glaring issues. The line spacing is still screwed up, but getting CentralNotice to preview properly is nearly impossible, apparently, so I'm not going to attempt a fix. The horrible orange has been removed and the date is now readable. --MZMcBride 04:35, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Notice flashing issue

Occasionally users complain that they can see a notice for a split second. The fix is trivial: make notices initially hidden (<div style="display:none">) and then make them visible in the javascript. -AlexSm 15:15, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Please delete for Japanese people

Hello, I'm a jawp sysop "背番号9". I have one request. Would you delete the tag to link to [1] ? You know, a big earthquake hit Japan two days ago. Many Japanese use jawp to get information. The tag is untimely, and leave bad impression. I don't know the system about the tag indetail. Would you help me?--背番号9 00:52, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello 背番号9. Miya asked the same questions, and Eloquence has said it's okay to turn it off for jawiki. I've turned off the notice. Cbrown1023 talk 02:15, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer very much.--背番号9 09:54, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Button to dismiss the currently running CentralNotice isn't working

Hi all. The off button for the currently running CentralNotice isn't working - as Fæ has said in an email to wikimediauk-l, "Though the banner hides itself when I click the box, everytime I open a new tab or reopen the browser it re-appears. I don't understand why the banner has a switch-off box clearly on it if it does not work." Mike Peel 09:31, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

I have made this fix; it is not the best, since the reason 'fundraising' is there is to separate the hiding functionality of the fundraising banners from that of other banners. However, I am pretty sure the one I changed it to works, so this is a temporary fix until someone can figure out why it doesn't work properly. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 12:47, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Can I just say that this is the 4th year in a row that this error is being made ? The very first thing of EVERY single notice should be to check if the hiding is working, because now we have again a lot more people who simply ignore ALL centralnotices (since it's not possible to permanently hide these unhideable notices, without hiding all other notices. Not properly working dismissing is the worst thing there is for a centralnotice. TheDJ 13:10, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
You are right, and I agree. However, this code worked fine until recently; my guess is that it is related to the recent MediaWiki 1.18 rollout (probably related to ResourceLoader). I'm sure we will have a more permanent fix very soon. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 14:18, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
The hack seems to have made the fundraising banner go away; it is now replaced with the mobile editor survey which I have also been trying to turn off since this morning. ---- Alexandr Dmitri 20:48, 7 October 2011 (UTC). Striking because lo and behold, I go back to en-WP after my comment here, and I am being invited to share my story, yet again. ---- Alexandr Dmitri 20:52, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, still not working. Please switch it off until the code is fixed, annoying users will hurt the fund raiser in the long term as more and more users will permanently block notices. -- 05:52, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
