Brilliant and much needed comm format
editThis is brilliant! It is exactly the kind of information level and density, but also frequency and proximity to the project updates I was missing in Abstract Wikipedia comm till now. Think this should be adapted and adopted as a recommendation to other projects ;-)
As a non-programmer it got super hard to follow mailing-list and irc/telegram discussion in current velocity is next to impossible to navigate unless in real-time and fully committed (so just being in wrong time zone to the core developers is a bit of setback). I think it will also help give structure to more technical contributors and better way/opportunity to easily catch up for ones late arriving to the project.
One thing I would encourage you and Comm team supporters is to consider to make this slightly more visual (both for text style and inclusion of graphics) as that really helps to go through longer texts and not having to open links to screenshots (at least with previews on mouse over?) would be awesome. It is global pandemic and late 2020, so every bit of focus and energy should be preserved if possible :-)
Looking forward to regular follow-ups and hope others will chip in so it does not eat so much of your time! Thanks for doing this. --Zblace (talk) 04:49, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Zblace: D'oh! Yes, the screenshot could have been easily inlined. Just did that.
- One reason for not adding more visual elements is that it makes it harder to copy it into email etc. It also needs more time, which is the biggest cost for that.
- One possibility could be that I draft the updates on wiki, and then people can chime in with making them more visual etc. I would love that. Do you think that's an option? --DVrandecic (WMF) (talk) 17:15, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Sure, but I think you should really just highlight at least 3-4 keywords to help whoever further goes on helping with visual style. I made a bold and provisional style edit to this one. Zblace (talk) 17:52, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
