Description edit

(Duplicated from that bugzilla record.)

I'd want the possibility to add a site wide notice rendered at the top of each wiki page. Before rendering any page the wiki engine would check for the existance of a page something like MediaWiki:Site notice and if it exists it would render the contents of that page first. This would be good for informing on site maintenance, feature upgrades or whatever that the site admins want everyone to take notice on.

It's already there. Check out MediaWiki:Sitenotice in your Wiki (or in any other MediaWiki wiki, if you need "inspiriation" for the content of the site notice). To remove a site notice, don't simply remove all content, substitute it with a minus sign ("-") instead. Some MediaWiki versions seriously dislike empty site notices and might crash totally. However, on 1.5.4 empty site notices seem to work, as a careless admin on one wiki found out :-) --Klaws 13:53, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:Farmnotice edit

  • Hallo! I noticed the behaviour of MediaWiki:Sitenotice at various wiki's maintained by the WikiMedia Foundation these days. The content of the default message was changed to somthing like
<center><span dir="ltr" >'''Notice:''' Uploads are disabled and images may not display for a few hours today while we make [[meta:November 2005 image server|{{SITENAME}}]] faster.</span></center>
  • However the message did not show up at wiki's wehere a local MediaWiki:Sitenotice or local MediaWiki:Sitenotice/xx messages where available.
  • I questioned myself if there is a need for a MediaWiki:Farmnotice which should be included on top of the MediaWiki:Sitenotice. If you add such a message please assure that it will be displayed properly also at RTL wiki's. Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 17:35, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. I ran a search for "Site notice" on both this wiki and the bugzilla database before filing that feature request... I'm not sure I quite follow what you are telling me though. You mean that writing somthing in MediaWiki:Sitenotice doesn't show up in some occations? It works perfectly for me though. I just feel a bit stupid filing that feature request when it was already implemented exactly as I wanted it. =) -- PEZ 00:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PEZ! Your point was OK if you think about a "site notice" for all projects. A hint: Use "advanced search" in the future. Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 23:03, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
