Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Assamese

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Project is eligible. Please contribute to the test at incubator:Wt/as. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 22:51, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal edit

There was an Assamese Wiktionary opened earlier, however was closed and moved to incubator due to inactivity (http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wt/as).

However, now we want to revive this project. This is a request to please re open the project.

Discussion edit

Arguments in favour edit

Basic Information edit

  • Assamese language is spoken in Assam (India), West Bengal (India), Arunachal (India), they use Arunachali dialect of Assamese, Nagaland(India), they use Nagamese dialect of Assamese, Bangladesh and various places of the Assamese communities (large number seen in Bangalore(India), Pune(India), the United States etc.) in various parts of world.
  • Assamese is the official language in Assam
  • Approximately 16,709,000 people in Assam speak Assamese,
  • Dialects: Jharwa (Pidgin), Mayang, Standard Assamese, Western Assamese (Kamrupi), Nagamese and Arunachali
  • Assamese is often used in all the states various ways, like words borrowed from it or as a connecting language. Assamese has been working as a very important connecting language in North- East India since medieval times.
  • Assamese alphabet maps one to one to the Devanagari alphabets
  • Assamese alphabet differs only three letters from Bengali, and so it isn't hard to design the Assamese Wiktionary, as Bengali Wiktionary ( https://bn.wiktionary.org/ ) is already there.
  • The Assamese Wikipedia has approx 2990 articles in it and growing. It is a successful project.

Other Causes edit

  • There are very few up-to-date paper dictionaries in Assamese.
  • Most of the people, especially poor students don't get access to a good dictionary, but can access it via mobile, which are available even in the far corners of the state.
  • Wiktionary can help poor Assamese students, who can't buy the expensive dictionaries (most of the good printed Assamese dictionaries are fat and too costly). Students can access the internet at a rate of less than 20 rupees per hour.
  • Wikimedia specific: Most of the technical terms are not available in Assamese and there is a dire need to have an online dictionary
  • Assamese doesn't have a on-line spell checker,
