Requests for new languages/Wikiquote Gorontalo

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

The Gorontalo language, or in the local dialect, the Bahasa Hulontalo, is a family of Austronesian languages spoken in the Gorontalo area, on the northern peninsula of Sulawesi island. It has fewer and fewer speakers. In 2015, it was estimated that there were about 1,000,000 active speakers of the Gorontalo language.

In 2018, the Gorontalo Wikipedia was released. While organising writing training on Wikipedia, we found that many of the young speakers of the Gorontalo language did not correctly manage the language, and it was very difficult to build sentences to create articles.

This encouraged us to introduce the Gorontalo Wiktionary, which contains the root words and their derivatives and examples of their use in a sentence. It has also been divided into various word classes to make it easier to search for them. Thus, speakers still in the learning stage can understand it and make sentences to compile articles.

Wikiquote is the final missing piece to Gorontalo's Wikipedia and Wiktionary. With Wikiquote, Gorontalo speakers can access valuable quotes from prominent individuals worldwide.

Gorontalo also recognises the local proverb, lumadu, which contains advice, proverbs, similes and pieces of advice. Getting all of these memorised on the Wikiquote would be excellent.
