Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Plautdietsch

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

There are about half a million speakers of Plautdietsch living in different countries across the globe -- and there is no Plautdietsch Wikipedia out there yet... Being the founder and editor of the single and international magazine Plautdietsch FRIND, the proposer (Wikipeeta) would like to gather a few more interested Plautdietsch people to edit this planned Plautdietsch Wikipedia project.

Arguments in favour edit

  1. The Pennsylvania German (Amish) Wikipedia language edition is already flourishing with 1492 articles. Therefore I believe that Plautdietsch (Mennonite) Wikipedia has the potential to achieve similar results if they were given the same opportunity to have their own Wikipedia language edition. --Jose77 03:19, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Es ist ein aktiv Project mit viele Seite. Deutschlehrer 14:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  3. In view of the Wikipedias in Dutch Low Saxon and in Plattdüütsch of Germany, a Plautdietsch Wikipedia would help to complete the possibility of expression in all forms of Low German on Wikipedia. Ni'jluuseger 17:47, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  4. This Wikipedia would be a very welcome addition! Servien 13:41, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  5. I'm ready to help, because I speak Plautdietsch. Strongly support.--Leamar (talk) 15:07, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Plautdietsch is a very distinct part of Low German and should definetely be considered a different language because it is indeed. Strongly support. --Stardsen (talk) 18:31, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  7. I am keen and eager on learning Plautdietsch. I hope this goes successful indeed. That Northern Irish Historian (talk) 19:49, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments against edit

Plautdietsch is a part of East Low German. It is part of Low German, which is well served by nds Wikipedia. There is few activity on Plautdietsch incubator. Sarcelles 15:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Plautdietsch communities for the most part do not live in Germany and have - for generations - had a distinct identity, experience, and linguistic development from Low German speakers in Germany. Plautdietsch in Mexico, for instance, would be influenced by the Spanish Dachsprache.
Plautdietsch speakers might find their way to a Plautdietsch Wikipedia more easily than to the Plattdüütsch one, and would so be encouraged to contribute their knowledge about their own geographies, cultures, history, et cetera. Ni'jluuseger 14:51, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about Low Prussian, which is more similar to Plautdietsch than it is to Low Saxon? Sarcelles 18:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since the Germans got expelled from Eastern Prussia after WW II there are no Low Prussian speaking communities anywhere except for the Plautdietsch ones. So what would be the difference or benefit of calling it Low Prussian instead of Plautdietsch? --::Slomox:: >< 07:55, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a word for Low German minus Plautdietsch and Low Prussian at all?Sarcelles 18:46, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

General discussion edit

Jo, oba woone Schriewwies ooda Orthographie solle wi bruke? Kaun een Mensch schrift "etj" un een aundra schrift daut selwjet Wuat uk aus "ekj?" Ooda es et bäta soone Froage too vejäte, un lote de Oabeit aunfange?

Yes, but which writing-system or orthography should we use? Can one person write "etj" and another write the same word as "ekj?" Or is it better to forget such questions, and let the work begin?
