Languages of the World (Graz Univ), Megrelian-Georgian Dictionary, Megrelian and Laz Bibliography |
Please read the handbook for requesters for help using this template correctly. |
Mingrelian (or Megrelian) is a South Caucasian language spoken by a half-million people in northwest Georgia. Although in the same language family as Georgian, both languages are not mutually intelligible.
Arguments in favour
edit- Living language, actively used in Georgia, with many speakers. Traditionally in a separate branch from Laz since the 1500s (similar to the relation between Portuguese and Galician), both also not mutually intelligible although with many similarities. This Wikipedia would benefit people who use exclusively and almost exclusively this language in their daily life. Two native speakers already showed their intention and interest in participating in this project. --Malafaya 18:04, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

- STRONG Support This is my native language. Gradually its dying. Opening of Wikipedia in this langauge will greatly contribute to its survival. Therefore, I stronngly support this langauge.
- STRONG Support I am native speaker of this langauge and strongly support it! — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Machirkholi (talk)
- Support. The Times Guide to the Peoples of Europe (translation in Croatian language, "Narodi Europe", 1997.) speaks about four Kartvelian languages, (with Mingrelian as one of them), daily newspaper in Mingrelian from 1930's, etc.. It classifies Mingrelians as one of four Kartvelian peoples (besides Georgians, Svans and Lazs). Wikipedia in this language will stop the gradual dying of this language. It will prevent the extinction. It will reverse process of dying and it will revive the language. We're obliged to save the languages. This is not "shall we start this wiki". This is "why took us so long to start kwf.wiki". Kubura 04:19, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

General discussion
editMingrelians are Georgians. We have one historical and ethnical roots. Akakigeo 19:56, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Some of the users say that Mingrelian is their native language. No, they are sitizens of Georgia and Gerogian is their native language. You may ask that, why Abkhazian wikipedia and why not Mingrelian? Because, by the Constitution of Georgia, Abkhazia is Auytonomous Republic and according to the 8th article of constitution, "The state language of Georgia shall be Georgian, and in Abkhazia — also Abkhazian." But you cannot find anywhere "Mingrelian Language". Of course, mingrelian can talk each other in Mingrelian Language, but I oppose the idea of "Mingrelian wikipedia". Mingrelians are Georgian people and Georgia has own wikipedia — ka.wikipedia.org -- Nodar Kherkheulidze 09:57, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
- Georgia is a country, whereas Wikipedias are per language and do not follow what is written in constitutions of certain countries. Everyone has the right to access information in his/her own native language. The Mingrelian Wikipedia will likely be created soon. SPQRobin (talk) 11:02, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
indeed, Wikipedia is per language not per constitution. and what is the relevance of the Georgian constitution here? Nothing, absolutely nothing. and don't bring here nationalistic crap. There are lots of countries with lots of languages and only some languages have constitutional status, but most languages have wikipeida!!!
- Agrees with SPQRobin Vibhijain 11:13, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Because of they are Georgians, their native language is Georgian. -- Nodar Kherkheulidze 18:36, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Does someone like so or not Mingrelian is my native language :) But in any case your argument is pointless as others already mentioned. Language exists. Therefore if there are sufficient users who wish to edit, wiki will be launched Kilavagora 20:37, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
For supporters: Please, while supporting creating that wiki, have in mind, that we all know Mingrelians are Georgians, but this will be used by enemy of our unity in dirty ways, as it always did. It acts with same, old rules. And someday, it will say: 'Look, Mingrelians have their own language, own place to live and even own Wikipedia!, So they are NOT Georgians, they are independent nation, Mingrelians!' Please, don't give them more arguments for crashing our unity, even by words. Thanks.—G.G. 06:25, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes, we are one nation and our unity is in our hands and it does not depend on anyone else! I regret to see that so many of you just don't want Megrelian Language to develop and to help us! I regret to see how you ignore our pain generated from the hopeless condition of our language! Anyway, hope wiki will be launched and soon you will be assured that all of your fears are groundless.
Friendly advice
editA friendly advice for the future editors of that wiki ( Malafaya, Dato deutschland, Alsandro, Island ...): make a wiki-babel (here on Meta) that contains kwf-N (or kwf-3, kwf-2, kwf-1).
Otherwise, you're confusing others (here on Meta). Noone of you has the kwf-wikibabel on Meta (some of you neither on ka.wiki): [1] [2] [3] [4]. Without that wikibabel, uninformed user might think that that language doesn't exist at all. Kubura 04:32, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- The Babel extension for Mingrelian has been supported for a long, long time. Thanks, GerardM 17:04, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Localisation update
editCurrently the localisation effort is at 65.03% for the most used messages. Thanks, GerardM 06:21, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
The localisation effort is now at 85.57% for the most used messages. Malafaya 23:30, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- Currently 85.24% of the most used MediaWiki messages have been localised. Localisation of these messages is a requirement before your request is finally assessed. This is the recent localisation activity for your language. Thanks, GerardM 12:22, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- All the most used MediaWiki messages have been translated--Kaiyr 20:10, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
