Hainanese is a branch of the Min Nan group of Chinese spoken in the southern Chinese islands and province of Hainan. It is mutually unintelligible with other Min Nan dialects, such as Teochew and Hokkien–Taiwanese. Its pronunciation is very different from other languages in the whole world -It has the complete Clicks sound pronunciation system. So it's very valuable. But now, the Mandarian Chinese is attacking the Hainanese language culture. And it's a danger in Hainanese language culture. We must try to protect it.

I think we can write Hainanese by Chinese character because Hainanese is a dialect of Chinese. We can use Traditional Chinese character to write the Hainanese. For example: 汝卟去処啲？(lu-beh-hu-dae-tih)means where are you going. We can try to find and write the orignal Chinese characters(本字) in Hainanese.
It's better than using Lantin I think. So I think It can use ISO 639-1 code for Hainanese Chinese character. Refer to Yue language(Cantonese粵語) and Wu(吳語)--海島之夏 09:42, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Both scripts can be used; Although it would be preferrable to write in the Latinized script since the uniqueness of the language could then be distinguished to non-Hainanese speakers. See here.
The Cantonese and Wu wikipedias were created before the implementation of the new Language proposal policy. The new policy requires that each new language proposal much have an existing ISO 693-3 Code. For example, it is "yue" for Cantonese and "wuu" for Wuu. The Hainanese Test-Wikipedia has been created here. Currently, Hainanese and Teochew are both classified as 'dialects' of the Southern Min language. Therefore when creating new articles on the test-Wikipedias, both of them need to use the ISO code "nan" in the short term. Of course, when both Hainanese and Teochew are assigned their individual ISO codes, then they can be separated. At the moment, there is a request for the Southern Min language to be split into two more narrowly defined languages [1]. Regarding ISO codes, they are not entirely necessary as there is no concrete rule regarding them. The Classical Chinese Wikipedia is known as "zh-classic" which is not ISO, so why can't this be rendered "zh-nan"? -- 李博杰  | —Talk contribs 11:34, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Obtaining a Hainanese ISO-639-3 language code

It has ISO 639-1 codes which is zh.

The ISO 639-1 codes are no longer applicable. You must use ISO 639-3 codes.
The current Language proposal policy states that: "If there is no valid ISO-639 code, you must obtain one". The current organisation which sets the ISO-639 codes is SIL International.
Hainanese currently does not have an ISO code and new language codes must be applied. I would suggest using "hnl" for the ISO code. If you prefer anpther three-letter code, then check here to make sure it has not been taken already.

Who got the idea that this language had click consonants? It is common knowledge in linguistics that there are no usual language outside Africa with them. Circeus 02:57, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
