Requests for comment/Domain parking

The following request for comments is closed. Closed due to no activity for a year with nothing that Meta-Wiki can apparently do, domains being a competence of Wikimedia technical operations.

Currently, domain names that are registered by Wikimedia but are not actually used redirect to the Wikipedia portal (example). This is obviously a rushed job, and I would like to see these domains redirect to the "Domain not configured" error page. KATMAKROFAN (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The way I see it, these domains exist to protect against typosquatting. As such, your example should probably be redirected to the Wikibooks portal, not to an "error page." I do not see how redirecting to an error page would help anything. Is this the only such domain, or are there other ones like this? DraconicDark (talk) 13:38, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
no. They are fine the way they are. --Artix Kreiger (Message Wall) 21:45, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KATMAKROFAN. According to <https://whois.nic.wiki>, <http://wikibooks.wiki> is indeed registered to the Wikimedia Foundation. The fact that this domain sends an HTTP 307 Temporary Redirect to <https://www.wikipedia.org> looks like a bug. Have you filed a ticket in Phabricator about this or searched for an existing ticket? I'm not sure a Meta-Wiki request for comments is needed here. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:05, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Something is wrong with this domain's setup - it is registered to WMF, yet the nameservers (which for some reason point to the registrar's own nameservers instead of WMF's) return (for the root of the domain) A records pointing to 54.148.61.160, which is also known as ec2-54-148-61-160.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com. ! --Krenair (talkcontribs) 21:50, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
