Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Tamil Wikiquote

The result of the following proposal for closing a WMF project is to KEEP the project. Please, do not modify this page.

The following discussion is closed: With more then a month and a half past since the last discussion there isn't a consensus to close the project. While the activity is still sparse it has picked up recently and is far and above what it was when the project was nominated.Jamesofur 02:36, 29 November 2009 (UTC) [reply]

The Tamil Wikiquote is highly inactive. Almost no real content, and no community or activity. Recent changes in past thirty days show only bots and maintenance edits, none to content pages. Tempodivalse [☎] 22:37, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the concern raised by 81.38.38.140, I have added a notice of this proposed closure to the main page. Adambro 13:37, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Adambro. I have also notified ta.wikipedia to be on the safer side and try to reach as many speakers as possible. --81.38.38.140 13:51, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support closure

  1. support - nearly inactive and no content. Barras 09:47, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Support, the 30 last days activity was Pathoschild's bot. Per q:ta:Special:Allpages and q:ta:Special:Statistics too. —Dferg (talk) 21:24, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Ravidreams's argument convinced me —Dferg (talk) 14:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Support per Dferg. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:01, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Support per nom. – Innv | d | s: 10:25, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Strong Support: No real content at all and no community. Languages from developing countries have a very small active wiki community and it would be great if those communities concentrate their efforts on fewer wiki projects and consolidate their position. கோபி 17:29, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Strong Support: As per my arguments here: Proposals_for_closing_projects/Closure_of_Tamil_Wikinews. I have to add that, one of the users have himself expressed, that Wikipedia/Wiktionary lacks itself a very large user community. This adds more support to my arguments. The same small user community cannot sustain contributions in multiple projects, over a period of time Vinodh.vinodh 19:09, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Strong Support Not much content and the present wiki work needs much more attention before taking up other things. --87.254.92.11 21:48, 1 July 2009 (UTC) Please log in to vote--79.109.10.102 16:41, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose closure

  1. Strong Oppose. I accept that the activity at Tamil Wikiquote at the moment is less. But this isn't a reason good enough to close it. Languages from developing countries have a very small active community whose energy are initially spent in bigger projects like wikipedia and wiktionary. They should be granted more time to be evaluated. Once we develop the bigger projects, we feel the need for the supporting projects and move on to them. Even Tamil Wikipedia and Wiktionary had a very dormant phase for first two years of operation. Now Tamil Wiktionary is one of the Top 15 wiktionaries in the world. Tamil Wikipedia leads Indian language wikis in many fronts. This is a proof that we have a very passionate and capable language community for wiki projects. The World Tamils are passing through a historic moment due to the Civil War situation in SriLanka. And we feel the need now more than ever for documenting news and quotes regarding this. We assure to show more activity and progress in these projects in the coming days. I request you to strongly consider this situation and keep the project open. Thank you--Ravidreams 11:09, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Strong Oppose. You are taking these arbitrary decisions without consulting or informing Tamil Wikimedia community. This is an abomination to the wiki processes. It is true, Tamil wiki projects such as Wikiquote, and Wikinews have very low activity at the moment. However, we are in process of introducing the Tamil wiki projects to a wider audience. We completed four work shops, and several talks. So, we expect greater activity in the future. If we have to go thorough the hell of a long process to activate these projects again. That does not help us any bit. --Natkeeran 13:57, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Strong Oppose. It's just a question of reach. People aren't aware of these projects. Even the strongly-active and very-purposeful Tamil Wikipedia and Tamil Wiktionary do not have many regular users. But they are very passionate about TAMIL and about WIKIPEDIA. It's only a matter of time that these projects pick up the clip and may even shoot past the major Tamil Wikis -- esp. Tamil Wikiquote should have a flood of quotes as the Tamil language is literally ripe with wise, very wise quotes. IT WILL BE A TREASURE LOST if the wise (or unwise!) decide to do away with these budding projects. --parithimathi 16:50, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Strong Oppose - Developing country wiki's always take some time for pick up. Believe we all know the reason for this. Now only Tamil people are hearing lot about Wiki in media outlets. so soon we can expect more activity. Closing the project is not a wise decision. --Kurumban 14:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Strong Oppose - For example, Tamil Wiktionary picked up pace in the last one and a half years. There are few very active members in Tamil Wiktionary. We expect the same may happen with this project as well, as we are reaching the mass through various media.--Sivakumar 19:16, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Strong Oppose - Although the current activities at Tamil Wikiquote is less, there is enough contents in it for people to view it. I myself have contributed to this project. If there is no activity for a period do we need to close a project? What is the logic behind it? By closing this project you are sending a message to all the wiki project contributors that their valuable time invested in these projects could go in vain any time. These projects are not only for contributors and editors. It is mainly for common public. They can come any time to view and get benefit out of it. Currently there are attempts to popularize all Tamil wiki projects. We are carrying out campaigns to attract more people to contribute. If the project is closed it will negatively affect all efforts towards this.Mayooranathan 05:42, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Oppose If you notice the data and charts in the paper cited by Ravi above, we've shown how Tamil Wikipedia has shown good organic growth. With the recent outreach activities, mentions in the press, increase in broadband penetration in India and Sri Lanka, inorganic growth can be expected to be at a good rate. -- Sundar 13:36, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Oppose. Per reasons above. --RubiksMaster110 07:18, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  9.
Oppose Per reasons above. And also, the usage of computers and internet is less (bellow 10%) among Tamil people and their govt. they are now begin to practicing the usage. My seniors are in constructive efforts. Kindly, encourage them. I think we Wikipeadians are educators not arbitrators. so, consider their constructions. தகவலுழவன் 11:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC){தொடர்புக்கு..}[reply]
  10. Strang Oppose : Now only the wikipedia is gathering tamil peoples awareness from Tamil Nadu, so please be wait. Tamil Wikiquote certainly acquire popularity.
  11. Strong Oppose : The inactivity on particular sections of wikipedia cannot be a reason for closure of those sites.
  12. Oppose We need time to take out the deficiency of this Wikiquote. —TBG 12:29, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  13. Strongly oppose : We will bring it active.Give us a one month time.On november,it will have as many articles as possible. Cheers. Vatsan34 13:48, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  14. Strong Oppose:It's an excellent resource and repository that could be used and improved. I plan to contribute actively. I am sure others will. Pazha.kandasamy 14:52, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
