WikiDepth

The WikiDepth Project is an initiative of Filipino wikipedians focusing on the Depth of Philippine language-based Wikipedia projects. It will be run by the Philippine Wikimedia Community (PH-WC) with the main objective of improving the Depth of selected Wikipedia editions.

The project will serve as a tool for depth monitoring and thus will provide data analysis to the trends.

Background

Philippine Wikipedia editions

There are eight (8) existing Philippine language-based Wikipedia projects namely Bikol Sentral, Cebuano, Chavacano Zamboangueño, Kapampangan, Ilokano, Pangasinan, Tagalog and Waray. Each of these languages has at least one million native speakers, except for Chavacano Zamboangueño which is threatened to be closed down for lack of editing activity. Among the existing proposed Wikipedia projects, Hiligaynon has over a million native speakers while Capiznon, Kinaray-a, Miraya Bikol and Rinconada Bikol have tens to hundreds of thousands native speakers.

Definition of Depth

The formula assumes that a relatively high number of page edits and the presence of support pages means articles have been updated. And the latter support pages are assumed to be a more important factor.

In the list of Wikipedias, depth is currently defined as:

The depth can be simplified to the equivalent formula below:

Significance of Depth

The depth or editing depth of Wikipedia is one of several possible rough indicators of the encyclopedia's collaborative quality, showing how frequently its articles are updated.

It does not refer to academic quality, which cannot be computed, but to Wikipedian quality, i.e. the depth of collaborativeness—a descriptor that is highly relevant for a Wikipedia.

Definition of New Terms

NonArticles are user pages, redirects, images, "project" pages, categories, templates, and all talk pages. Total is simply NonArticles + Articles.

Simple Edits are edits which are only alterations to the content of a page, not including the creation of a page (articles and non-articles).

Note: Creation of a page (article and non-article) is equivalent to 1 Edit

Objectives

1. To provide significant improvements to the Depth of different Philippine language-based Wikipedia editions
2. To ensure the balance of increase between the Depth and the No. of Articles
3. To serve as a monitoring tool for Depth and to provide data analysis on the trends
4. To promote collaboration and discussions regarding the depth of selected Wikipedia editions within the community

Year 2

The pilot-scale testing of the WikiDepth Project ran from November 15, 2021 to December 31, 2022. Monitoring of depth in Bikol Wikipedia with consequent data analysis was done. Its outcomes served as a guide to further improve the approach to the objectives and the feasibility of the application to other Wikipedia editions.

On its 2nd year, the project will analyse the growth and depth of the project with the intention to extend the initiative to other Philippine language-based Wikipedia editions like Chavacano Zamboangueño Wikipedia, Kapampangan Wikipedia, Waray Wikipedia, and Cebuano Wikipedia.

Data Monitoring

As a background, Bikol Wikipedia has a depth of 16.89 and no. of articles of 16,004 as of 05:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC). Its number of articles rose dramatically due to different editing activities related to the 15th year celebration of Bikol Wikipedia and monthly thematic editing sessions by the community. On 30 September 2023, the number of articles reach 15,000 with a depth within the 17.00 range. The depth of Bikol Wikipedia reached the 21.0 range on October 31, 2022 and has decreased since then due to the increase of new articles being created regularly.

To attain a +/- 0 Depth (no change of depth) for every 1 new article, you need to either create 2.13 new Non-articles or have 45.29 Simple Edits.
