I am requesting funds for 50% the cost of the air travel only, not to exceed $ 300 USD.

Proposed Participation

I serve as the primary liaison between the Wikimedia/Wikipedia volunteers and the Gerald Ford Library/Museum/National Archives staff. It is our thought that the development and trajectory of this project may become the model for future NARA agency participation, as well as for the partnerships just forming at cultural institutions on the University of Michigan campus. In the last six months this project has grown to include more collaborators –

Goal and Expected Impact

At the conference, I’d like to start a conversation with attendees about a few topics:

  • What works?
  • What doesn’t?
  • How does an agency handle the benefits of this kind of partnership?

I have a BIG question, too – GLAM is about uploading primary source material, and Wikipedia is about referencing secondary sources…..

  • how do we align these missions
  • how/will/does this change a donating institution’s perception of Wikipedia and the content that is created on Wikipedia?

The community feedback from these topics will provide me with additional language, concepts and skills to engage staff at my “home” agency, and in my local open source/Wikimedia community.

Post-conference, I intend to do the following:

  • give a talk to the OpenSource community based at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (date TBD).
  • create a blog post for the OpenSource blogcommunity based at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (date TBD).

Using the ‘toolkit’ provided by the conference I will be better equipped to serve as an open knowledge/GLAMWikimedia advocate for Michigan, the Ford Library/Museum/the National Archives, and also in the University of Michigan community. The Ford Library/Museum open knowledge project partnerships serve as a model for other Federal and university level institutions – but our model is successful only to the extent to which I educate myself and others.
