First training

edit

During October, November, and December 2023 and January 2024, we carried out our First educational program designed to train women editors in content creation and improvement of Wikimedia projects. This training program was aimed at Latin American women from diverse backgrounds, both rural and urban, with different ages, professions, trades, activities, and sexual orientations. We aimed to create locally relevant and underrepresented knowledge to ensure diverse and equitable representation of the Global South in Wikimedia projects and foster an environment where all women participants could contribute their own ideas and opinions, strategically aligning them with the Wikimedia community's goals. The central impact we envisioned to counter gender inequality in Wikimedia projects in the region was to empower women to generate or enhance articles with quality content related to topics relevant to their localities and addressing the gender gap. Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Programa didáctico diseñado para capacitar a editoras en la creación y mejora de contenidos (ID: 22215958) We are interested in investing in skill development. We believe that one effective way is by training women editors in Latin America, a geographically underrepresented region, through training, mentoring, coaching, online learning, and peer support.

  • Goals:
  • Identify women interested in knowledge dissemination and invest in them to develop crucial technical and interpersonal skills for the health and growth of the movement, empower them with knowledge, and strengthen their abilities to establish new working groups.
  • Provide them with the knowledge and tools necessary to lead team efforts towards achieving movement goals, promoting free knowledge, and expanding Wikimedia movement presence in various locations.
  • Create an environment where all participants can contribute their own ideas and opinions and strategically focus them towards Wikimedia community goals.
  • Promote collaboration strategies with movement volunteers to create a sustainable network.
  • Empower underrepresented communities to increase and improve diversity within the movement by training editors and supporting organizational development and project management in underrepresented communities within Wikimedia projects.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer.

The methodology was both theoretical and practical. It was an online course, conducted virtually, with a program consisting of theoretical and practical training, supported through experiential learning and based on a system of courses, workshops, and mentoring. The format involved virtual online group workshops with collaborative work.

48 women enrolled, out of which 44 attended the classes, and 40 managed to create new articles and improve many more. By the end of the training, our Facebook user group reached 278 members, and our Instagram page reached 157 followers. Our user group also grew to 105 members. Additionally, we created a channel on WhatsApp and a group on Telegram.

At the training, there were women from Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the United States, Panama, Peru, El Salvador and Venezuela. There was a wide age range: the youngest participant was 18 years old and the oldest was 64. The women were journalists, lawyers, teachers, university students, feminist activists, psychotherapists, politicians, scientists, communicators, bloggers, writers, communications associate for an NGO, community managers, English teachers, librarians, graphic designers, art gallery managers, biologists, science education managers, and academics.

During the training, a total of 69 new articles were created, with 25 new articles on Wikipedia and 44 new articles on Wikiquote. Additionally, 42 new categories were created in total across Wikipedia, Wikiquote, and Wikimedia Commons. Furthermore, 209 pages on Wikipedia and 167 pages on Wikiquote were improved. Items were also created and improved on Wikidata, and 64 files were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Mujereando

edit

We also created the campaign Mujereando, an annual campaign that will be carried out every year with the aim of increasing the number of articles about women on Wikiquote in Spanish. All those people interested in improving and creating content on Wikiquote with famous phrases from relevant and recognized women are welcome. It is not necessary to have previous experience in editing to participate since every year we give virtual workshops to teach editing.

Second training

edit

The second training session was a complement to the first one. However, we announced it as if it were a new training session since the objective was now different. The aim was not to teach women how to edit. Just like in the first course, we grouped the women according to their ability and experience. To determine the interest in participation and learning preferences of those who took the first training, we conducted surveys and individual interviews before its conclusion, and some women expressed interest in a second phase. It lasted two months, July and August.

In this course, women learned to organize events and workshops to promote collaborative learning and knowledge exchange. At the end of the training the participants had understood how to organize events, activities, talks, workshops and editathons but insisted that they needed to better understand Wikipedia's policies and conventions and learn how to edit and create encyclopedic articles before being encouraged to organize events. A nice networking of Latin American women interested in participating in the Wikimedia movement was generated. What interested us the most was that they ended up understanding how the movement works and all the organizational activism options available to them. As a result of the training. User:Toronja roja, she organized an online event called Mujeres Notables to improve and create content on Wikiquote with famous quotes from notable women. Other event will be organiced in Perú, other in province of Formosa, Argentina, and other in Dominican Republic before the end of the year 2024.

Escuela de lideresas/School of Female Leaders

edit

Council members virtual meeting 2024

We created the proyect of School of Female Leaders. This is a program to create a school of women Wikimedia users, event organizers and editors of Wikipedia in Latin America. Our vision is a Wikimedia movement in which women can participate on equal terms with men, in which there are women holding leadership positions, organizing events and activities and training other women with the aim of achieving a more inclusive Wikipedia and Wikimedia where the sum of all human knowledge can truly be shared freely. Our proposal is a didactic program for the training of women, focused on the implementation of the movement's strategies, carrying out different trainings so that the participants know the resources available within the Wikimedia movement. We are interested in training new users who can function as pioneers in their respective localities, with training in a gender perspective, so that, in the future, they lead and enrich the movement. We want to improve the management and self-management capacity of volunteers at Wikimedia and to do so we believe it is important to invest in the development of skills and leadership in women in the region.
