What is the Namespace
editI am totally confused as to what the main namespace is on meta. Is it Meta-Wikipedia, Wikipedia, Meta.Wikipedia, Meta-Wikimedia, WikiMedia. Please someone make up their mind and pick one (and tell it to the rest of us). Dori | Talk 14:10, 6 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- According to the language file, it is officially "Wikipedia", but Meta.Wikimedia: and Meta-Wikimedia: are being used as pseudo-Wikipedia-namespaces. I have suggested [1] that it be changed to just "Meta". Angela 18:39, 6 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think 'meta' is the best bet. The only issue I see is that inter-wiki links to meta's meta pages will be meta:meta:page name. But the same is already true for Wikibooks and Wiktionary, so no big deal (esp since I don't foresee much need to link to one projects meta pages from another project - the whole point of the meta namespace is to have pages about the wiki they are on - the article namespace is were the real content is). --Maveric149 23:11, 6 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- And I propose making them redirects to prevent further confusion! -- since these pages may be linked to from outside sites, and we have no way of telling them to change their links. To avoid confusion, we should make sure that nothing internally links to the old names (which we'd have to do anyway before deleting). Then nobody will ever see them except people that deliberately look behind the scenes ("What links here", etc). -- Toby Bartels 22:27, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Actually to really prevent confusion we need to first activate the 'meta' namespace and then change the background color of every non-article namespace page to light yellow (article namespace should remain the current light grey). The major reason why everything was made to be grey before was to prevent confusion in novice users between meta and the English Wikipedia. But now meta has its own logo, will soon has its own namespace and will eventually be moved to meta.wikimedia.org. The visual similarity between en.wikipedia and meta will be far less (it is also a bit hard to explain what a namespace is and how to tell special-use namespaces apart from content namespaces when all the pages are the same color). --Maveric149 22:40, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
