@JWBTH can you please clarify why
  1. this needs to support template parameters rather than just system message parameters (i.e. why not just use $2 and $1 directly)
  2. why the bolding of the page title should be removed around the $2
? I support the addition of the link count tool but need some more information before doing this; I've disabled the edit request template for now but please ping me in your response --DannyS712 (talk) 02:26, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@DannyS712: Sorry, I missed the disappeared bolding. No particular purpose in using a template parameter as well. Good catch, thank you, I updated the code. Jack who built the house (talk) 02:55, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@JWBTH okay, thanks for confirming. I've made the page, but I kept the <strong> tags for bolding and also removed the template parameter support around $1. Let me know if this works for you. --DannyS712 (talk) 19:35, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Side note: although it's <strong> in the original, it seems to me semantically it's precisely <b>, not <strong>, since we bring attention to text, not indicate its importance. Jack who built the house (talk) 19:43, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@JWBTH I'm just going with what the developers decided - if you want to submit a patch on Gerrit with that reasoning I'd be happy to take a look (or if you want me to send one) but I figured we should be consistent with other projects and with what the label previously used DannyS712 (talk) 06:31, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Another thing I forgot: please wrap the content in

<div class="mw-parser-output">
...
</div>

to make {{flatlist}} work (it has TemplateStyles that only work inside .mw-parser-output). Jack who built the house (talk) 00:25, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

  Comment @DannyS712 and JWBTH: I have removed this at this time for a better conversation. It is a poor idea to have an unprotected template sitting as the base for a mediawiki: ns page. Those aspects should be resolved prior to stepping back into that space.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I also don't think that we should be overriding the display of this message in other languages. That is not the purpose of meta and translatable mediawiki: messages wherever possible.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:11, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what causes difficulties here and hope they are resolved soon. This is a very simple request satisfying a very simple need that editors in many wikis have – having a "links count" link at Special:WhatLinksHere, to the point that it is standard practice. The year is 2023 (soon 2024), it's surprising to see a popular WMF wiki with the standard message at MediaWiki:Linkshere. Jack who built the house (talk) 12:20, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
If that's about the {{ilm}} template at the top of this page (which was added in 2006), then I agree – I've rarely seen the practice of overriding messages like this for other languages on a particular wiki, as opposed to MediaWiki in general. Jack who built the house (talk) 02:02, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

As one can tell from Link Count, the exact tool the link to which I'm asking to add 😁, the {{flatlist}} template has 2,549 transclusions. If templates with 2,549 transclusions are ineligible on your wiki for protection and you don't want to protect it for the sake of this message, you can safely remove the template usage from the message (it's included only for consistency with other wikis and because of the potential that other links are added to the list) and instead use this code:

The following pages link to <strong>$2</strong>

External tools: [https://linkcount.toolforge.org/?project=meta.wikimedia.org&page={{urlencode:{{{1|$1}}}}} Link count]
----

– which would give:
The following pages link to $2

External tools: Link count
