Are you a medical educator? Want to work with your students on adding quality medical content to Wikipedia and don't know how to get started? This learning pattern will provide some links that will give you an idea on how to get started.

What is the solution?

Wonderful news! You will be joining a growing group of educators who teach with Wikipedia and specifically contribute to medical content in Wikipedia. Besides the education portal on outreach, where you can find general resources for implementing Wikipedia into your curriculum, here are some specific links relevant to working on medical content you might find useful.

Getting started

• WikiProject Medicine translation project – WikiProject medicine has started a cross-languages translation project, in collaboration with Translators Without Boarder. They've mapped the most important medical articles needed in every language and created shorter versions of these 797 articles. One activity you can do with your students is ensuring these articles are available in your language. We track the articles in different languages via this google doc. You can also use this Wikidata query to see a list of all articles available in English but not in your language. Under "Not in Language", just change the initial to that of your home wiki.

• An Online tutorial on editing medical topics - this 10 minutes tutorial will give you an idea for the type of issues you should be conveying to your students. If needed, it could be translated and adapted to your local wiki.

• A handout for students on editing medical-related articles- this provides some insight as to what educators have available for their students in English. If you find it useful, you might want to translate this brochure to Burmese and adapt it to your local wiki.

• Wikipedia & Medicine Facebook group – we've just opened this FB group, where you can connect with the people who run similar projects with their students, ask questions, share your experience and get inspired.

• Notes from the Wikipedia & Medicine day at Wikimania 2016, as well as a summary lecture on medical topics during Wikimania – this will give you some idea of what has happened during 2016.
• Wiki-Med course model - this is one model of teaching Wikipedia to medical students in an elective, for-credit, semester-long course. Here's a YouTube video of a session on Wikipedia & Medicine with students from Tel Aviv University, featuring Dr. James Heilman as guest lecturer (you might find the Q & A section at the end of the video especially interesting).
