Overview edit

Nigerian Flag

In Nigeria, as in many other countries, there are regions where internet access may be scarce, expensive, or unreliable. Internet connectivity has been a major Challenge in Nigeria. This hinders quality Education, educational inclusion and encourages inequality especially in rural or remote regions.

  • Kiwix serves as a valuable resource in Nigeria where reliable internet access may not always be available, helping to bridge the digital divide and promote access to information and education

Other benefits in Nigeria includes:

  • Knowledge Preservation: Kiwix contributes to the preservation of knowledge for future generations by downloading and archiving content. When it comes to local knowledge and cultural heritage, this can be very significant.
  • Information Access: Kiwix gives users access to a wealth of information, including Wikipedia articles, instructional resources, health-related information, and more. Knowledge-seekers, researchers, and students may find this useful especially in Nigeria where OER is not deeply rooted or lack awareness
  • Educational Resource: Kiwix can be used as an educational tool. It allows students and teachers to access educational materials, articles, books, and other resources without relying on an internet connection.
  • Reduced Data Costs: Browsing the internet can be expensive, especially for individuals with limited data plans. By using Kiwix to download content for offline use, users can reduce their data consumption.

Pilot implementation in Nigeria edit

This project is under the Kiwix4schools Mentorship Program organised by Open Foundation West Africa. The pilot project was implemented in a Nigerian school for the first time at Federal Government Boys College Garki Wuye Campus in Abuja Nigeria on the 8th of November 2023. Before the launch of the project students and teachers had no idea of Kiwix is neither have they heard of it. Therefore the Implementation team was charged with introducing Kiwix to the community. The team installed the Kiwix software in the Laptops and on the day of training, 49 Students were trained on

  • Who a digital citizen is
  • Elements of a digital citizen
  • Internet
  • Uses of Internet
  • Understanding Kiwix and many more

The training was successful and we hope to get more schools in Nigeria on board.

Team edit

  • Oby Ezeilo Kiwix Ambassador for Nigeria/Project Lead
  • Adebayo Adetunji Project Assistant/IT Specialist
  • Marian Ifejika-Tor Project Assitant

Challenges edit

  • Due to copyright law and policies in Nigeria it was impossible to collect and convert some educational contents to Kiwix content
  • Limited computers in the ICT Unit
  • Limited space for storage, ZIM files can be quite large and may require significant storage space on the device or external storage media
  • Lack of educational content in Kiwix that is relevant to Nigeria curriculum

Impact edit

49 Students were trained during the Lunch, some educational content were downloaded in the school system and this will serve as a control measure and hinder the interferences from internet, This gave them some excitements and made them eager to learn more. For students, individuals and organizations in Nigeria with unreliable or expensive internet access, Kiwix provides a practical solution for accessing vital information without the need for a constant internet connection. Kiwix has made a significant impact in expanding access to information, education, and resources for students and communities around the world. Its ability to provide offline access to web content has been particularly valuable in areas with limited or unreliable internet connectivity.

Recommendations edit

  • Creating more relevant curriculum based content on Kiwix
  • Creating awareness and getting more schools involved
