CALL TO IMPROVE THE PRESENCE OF MUSEUMS IN WIKIMEDIA PROJECTS

International Museum Day 2023

ICOM has been organizing the International Museum Day for over 40 years. The 2023 edition will take place on May 18th. Please join our GLAM Digital event on the 18th of May at 6 pm European time.

New Museum Definition

For this year's edition there is the new definition for museums that was developed over the past five years and now is ready to become a living benchmark for all our content:

“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”

Sustainability and Wellbeing

Museums are key contributors to the wellbeing and to the sustainable development of communities. As trusted institutions and important threads in shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change. Museums contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals from supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity, to tackling social isolation and improving mental health.

The aim is to explore the potential of museums for Sustainability and Wellbeing through three goals from a set from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations:

International Museum Day 2023 Goal 3 Global Health and Wellbeing: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, in particular concerning mental health and social isolation.
International Museum Day 2023 Goal 13 Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, adopting low-carbon practices in the Global North and mitigation strategies in the Global South.
International Museum Day 2023 Goal 15 Life on Land: Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, amplifying the voices of indigenous leaders and raising awareness on the loss of biodiversity.

On May 18th, the aim is to realise the full transformative potential that museums have for sustainable development and wellbeing!

Have fun exploring!
The kick-off event GLAM digital on May 18 addresses the new definition of museums and supports the sustainable work of cultural memory in a time shaken by crises. How can objects in collections be preserved and protected for the future? How digital can a museum be in the future? The GLAM Digital event focuses on the process of digital archiving and invites participation. Express your interest here!

THANK YOU AND SUPPORTERS

We thank all the volunteers engaging in our projects and we hope you will continue to make a contribution to free cultural knowledge by adding and completing the Wikimedia projects on topics related to the theme of International Museum Day 2023
"Sustainability and Wellbeing".

The objective of International Museum Day (IMD) is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
