NS_USER pages

Aren't the pages under the NS_USER namespace protected? I thought user pages should be allowed to be edited only by the owner of the page. As of now anyone can edit the pages under the user namespace.

Please clarify.....

User pages are editable by anyone. However, css/js user subpages are automatically protected and can be edited only by that user or by an admin. If you want non-admins to have protected user pages, an easy hack is to add {{User:{{{1}}}/Me.css}} to the user page, protect it, and then the user will be able to edit [[User:whatever/Me.css]] instead. They won't be able to preview the page in the normal way though. See wikicities:c:furry:Category:Protected person articles for examples. Angela 11:25, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

namespace tabs

I created a custom namespace called "Reviews" by editing the $wgExtraNamespaces variable in the LocalSettings.php file. Then, I proceeded to create a test page within the namespace, specifically by naming it as Reviews:Test. Everything works well to the point of the page being within the namespace. However, the first tab on the top should identify the namespace but it does not say "Reviews"; it just says "article". What have I got wrong here? Monday, April 17, 2006

Namespace Access Permission

I've created a custom namespace called "Private", and now would like to restrict all except a particular user or group from reading or writing the pages it contains. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this can be implemented, or where in the source I should look for the relevant functionality? Thanks!

Namespace operating as Category?

Hi. Is there a way to force a custom namespace to act as a category? I'm willing to do some modding, but I just need to know where. -- Nexis 02:34, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I, too, would like to know the answer to this. -- Treader 06:50, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Listing the Namespaces

Is there a way to list the namespaces that have been defined in a wiki? Thanks.

See e.g. the menu of Special:Allpages.--Patrick 04:35, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Visual appearance

"It is possible to customise the visual appearance of pages by namespace..."

Might be nice to know how... 216.23.122.37 00:43, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

With CSS, I added a link to an example.--Patrick 08:08, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

NAMESPACE:CONFUSION

As far as I can tell, some of the namespaces are required for the system to function as designed, such as the "Special", "MediaWiki", "User", and "Help". However, It gets a bit confusing from there. For instance, if I name $wgSitename is "TEST" what is the difference between the "TEST" namespace and "(Main)" namespace?

I initially thought they were the same thing, but I found that by going to a namespace URL (such as http://localhost/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Allpages&namespace=0) I get a really cool dropbox with all the namespaces. There, I find that they are BOTH listed and generate a different list of documents (Articles?).

ANSWER: By design Main is supposed to be for the general public and "Test", in your example, is for policy and such for your members. It is, however, not required that you do this. Paul Barkley 13:32, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, is there any significance to the other names? I mean, the "Template" and "Category" namespaces are empty and do not appear to be integral to the site. That is, while the "Help" namespace is also empty, I have seen some links that lead to it - implying that the Help content needs to be added. Yet, I see nothing linking to the "Template" and "Category" namespaces. Could these be renamed? Could they be eliminated?

ANSWER: Template namespace is used for Templates. Paul Barkley 13:32, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and is "Category" namespace actually for creating new categories? I thought this was the function of the namespaces?

ANSWER: Category is not for creating new categories, it is for the pages that you can create that describe the categories. Paul Barkley 13:32, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Finally, can one design a structure with sub-categories? That is, could I have a Fruit category/namespace and a Vegetable category/namespace, with each having sub-categories/namespaces? The idea being that I could go to the URL above and use the dropbox to go to the Fruit namespace and see all documents in the namespace, but go to some other URL and see just the "Apple" sub-category/namespace of documents?

ANSWER:

If all this is clearly defined somewhere I'm not too lazy to read it -- I just can't find it to read. So if there are helpful URLs please post them here. Otherwise I would appreciate an answer from the WikiPros.

Thank you in advance.

Namespace names

How do you change the actual name of the namespace, like Template:, User:, Image:, etc.? --334 17:04, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

How to display Sub Namespace

Just like there is a User_talk in all User pages, I tried to create a User_specialinfo

It is accessible in User_specialinfo:Joe but I want a Specialinfos flag to appear in all Users pages, just like the User talk flag appear on all.
Other problem, when i access User_specialinfo:Joe the title is Editing User:Joe instead of Editing User specialinfos:Joe like in talk page
