Questions about your request

edit

Dear PeterTheOne,

Thank you for submitting this request. Before the committee makes a decision about this proposal, can you please provide more information about the following:

  • Since we are not very familiar with your maps extensions, can you tell us more about how they are used on Wikimedia projects?
  • Also, how do anticipate that your proposed participation in this event will benefit Wikimedia projects? You mentioned that applications for SemanticMediaWiki will grow. Though this has value for its own sake, since SemanticMediaWiki is not directly a Wikimedia project, and this grant program funds requests that fit with Wikimedia's strategic priorities, we need you to be clear about how your plan contributes to those priorities. Please describe concrete outcomes you anticipate as a result of your participation in the event, particularly with regard to the Wikimedia movement.
  • Have you pursued other avenues of support and funding, if available?

Thanks in advance for your answers to these questions.

Kind regards,

Marti (WMF) (talk) 16:02, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Sneaking in one more question!  :-)
  • Have you submitted a talk/presentation? If so, has it been accepted? If not, please describe your participation plan in greater detail.
Thanks!
Dear Marti! Maybe I add my comments here, since it was also my idea to suggest Peter to write his application here:
So far, many Mediawiki-Users have the wish to map things. There was no good solution for this, even the Wikipedia is using some kind of workaround now. With SMW+Maps it is now possible to query the whole data, to make it visible on the map and to reload it as you move the map without having to use some complicated workarounds.
Unfortunately SMW is not a direct Wikimedia project. But According to the Strategic Plan document the Wikimedia operates and manages the Mediawiki, some points concerned the development of MediaWiki and its enhancements.
The WikiApiary-Stats show that the latest Maps-Plugins (3.5 or newer) are used by 96 Wiki-Projects. While Wikimedia might have a different plan with Wikidata and Kartographer I think that solutions that work here and now should be supported until the big open construction area is finished.
This was the part with the plugin itself. The other thing is that the community needs programmers who are able to contribute things, und who are willing to work together with the community. So I think it might be worth supporting programmers who already have shown that they were able to contribute in a good quality, and who might be motivated to continue their work in the future.
I hope I could answer some of your questions. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a programme that exactly fits to this case, otherwise I think it might still be a good idea to support source code contributors as well as content contributors. - Flexmaen (talk) 21:46, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Flexmaen: thank you for your reply. While we appreciate your reply on behalf of PeterTheOne, the committee would still also like to hear from PeterTheOne since the funding request came from him.
@PeterTheOne: this comment is just a duplicate of the emails sent to you. Please reply to Marti's comments. However, if you no longer wish for support or did not attend the conference, kindly change your submission's status to 'withdrawn'. Or let us know, and we'll update accordingly. -- Thank you, JTud (WMF), Grants Administrator (talk) 16:38, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@PeterTheOne: since we have not heard back from you (here and via emails sent to you) and the event has passed, we are marking your request for support 'withdrawn'. -- Best, JTud (WMF), Grants Administrator (talk) 15:54, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, for not withdrawing earlier myself. To confirm: I didn't end up going to SMWCon 2016. Anyway, thanks for considering my request! --PeterTheOne (talk) 19:18, 24 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
