Not funded

Hello Jwale2, thank you for submitting your grant application for Wiki Update. We appreciate your interest in contributing to the mission of the Wikimedia Movement. We are continuously strengthening our grants review process, ensuring that grant funding is being invested towards impactful projects and efforts geared towards contributing to the mission of Wikimedia Movement in the most efficient and effective manner.

After a thorough review of your application, we have decided to not fund your Rapid Fund request. Here are the reasons behind my decision:

  • Initial project impact is not clear: I reviewed the initial data shared and I don't think that the impact is substantial enough. For example, there are only 2 unique listeners in the last 7 days, there were 231 plays all time, and the number of estimated audience is 6.
  • Proposed impact is not clear: The proposed project impact, including those mentioned in the impact section are not clear.
  • Proposed budget is not aligned with the project goals:
    • It's unclear why the applicant requests 1000 USD of internet expenses for a whole year. I think this amount is higher from what the applicant would actually need for the internet.
    • Production costs are unclear.
    • Support to Graphic Designers - I don't think that a project whose main focus is the production of podcasts needs support from a graphic designer for 12 months. I think that a few visuals can be created for the podcasts but other than, I don't think there is a need to engage designers throughout the year.
    • Promotion - I don't think that the project should focus on promoting the podcasts through paid social media advertising.
    • Contingency - these expenses are high. We usually don't allow high contingency expenses in terms of the Rapid Fund project.

We'll be glad to reconsider this grant submission only when the project impact is clearly described and aligned with the request budget/activities. The project budget should also be revised substantially.

Thanks again for your work for the movement. Wishing you all the best. Best regards, --DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 11:13, 2 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi DSaroyan (WMF), thaks for the reply below are feed back to the questions;

  • Initial project impact is not clear: With the impact stated above is a very old one, this was made available during our earlier application in December 2021. The podcast originally started in May,2021 and the primary focus is to tell community stories through podcasting and also through that we organize trainings and also provide skills to the community.

In the last eighty month thus from the time we started the podcast (May-December,2021), thus when we had 2 unique listeners in the last 7 days (thus for a particular pod episode), there were 231 plays all time (all time in the year of review), and the number of estimated audience is 6 (thus for a particular pod episode).

Now in barely two months into the new year of 2022, the data is shared in the link below; showing that we have increased on listenership having 462 listenership all time, which is an increase of 231 + (some data is still loading) in just two month comparing it to last years data which took us eight month to reach 231. So this means that community is in tune with what we are doing concerning podcasting and also organizing of training event to provide skills. link here

  • Proposed impact is not clear:

So in the proposed project I made mention of campaign that the podcast community or wiki Update would be engaged in thus. Ghana Histo Cita-thon, VGMA Hack Night, AfroCine and more. The impact of these project and more will be acquired through using the outreach dashboard and other matrix system. More explanation below.

1. Number of people reached/listenership - 1000, so we were looking at having 1000 listeners at the end of the year but looking at the numbers now we might surpass if we are to get needed support from the foundation.

2. Number of campaign participants - 200, So with this we will be looking at engaging 200 participants in our campaign by the end of the year.

3. Increase in pageviews for a Wikimedia project - 100 +, thus the number of people who view a pages that have been created after each campaign by the end of the year .

4. Number of content creation - 100, Also in our training and campaign events that we will be organizing we will be creating articles of which a dashboard will be created to collect the data

  • It's unclear why the applicant requests 1000 USD of internet expenses for a whole year. I think this amount is higher from what the applicant would actually need for the internet.
With this we are running a podcast of telling community stories and also engaging in local and global campaign which will demand high internet to be used for a whole year we can't state a short term otherwise we might no achieve our goals.
  • Production costs are unclear: So for the production we have decided to put a hold on it for now, we will be looking at how this years perform will be like, so we have scraped it total.
  • Support for Graphic Design - Ok if thus the issue we will scrap the activity of a graphic designer and we ask for design support for the whole year USD 100 for our design works if that is not done will return funds
