Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Jamie Tubers/Ilorin Wikimedia Hub Bi-Monthly Workshops/Report

Report accepted edit

Hello Jamie Tubers, thanks for submitting this comprehensive final report. We appreciate all the efforts you have put into organizing this series of edit-a-thons. It’s great to see that you have met all the initial goals engaging a considerable number of new editors into the Ilorin Wikimedia community. I have reviewed and accepted your expense documents and final report and have two questions that I would like you to respond to.

  • I really like the idea of having developer workshops! Have any of the participants continued volunteering and coding on Wikimedia projects after the event?
  • Which platforms have been the most effective for you to attract new participants?

Thank you again for your work on this project and for your contributions to the Wikimedia Movement. This grant is now complete. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 07:35, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for accepting this report. here are my responses to your questions.
  • Oh yes indeed. We currently have around 5 very active volunteers who continued mediawiki contributions, and about 5 more who are still very keen in getting a good grasp of the Wikimedia developer world. Furthermore, one of the developers who attended the workshops has been employed as a software developer for the Wikimedia Foundation. So, the new community is already making some impact in the movement.
  • I'm not sure what you mean by this (do you mean communication platforms? Or Wikimedia platforms?). If it's the former, all our communication platforms have contributed fairly equally in attracting new participants. I would say word of mouth among relevant networks usually do most of the work though. If what you were asking was about which Wikimedia platforms new participants found most interesting; I would say Wikidata, due to the ease of entry. However, Wikipedia still attracts the most retention (due to its popularity) and most participants want to still contribute to Wikipedia in the long run. The developer workshop is pretty new, so it is not so easy to judge how attractive the platform can be in the long run.
I hope I have been able to answer your questions. Thank you once again!--Jamie Tubers (talk) 17:46, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hello Jamie Tubers, thanks for your responses. I'm glad that you have five very active contributors! For the second question, I meant the communication platforms, thanks for clarifying this too. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 05:25, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
