Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Discott/5th Global Congress on Intellectual Property and the Public Interest/Report

Comment: User:Discott is right to say that it was a good outcome to introduce Wikimedia DC people to the PIJIP program at American University's law school (the Washington School of Law). PIJIP = Program for Information Justice and Intellectual Property, and includes the topics of intellectual property in the public interest. They are good partners for Wikimedia in general.

Wikimedia DC went on to hold a forum on copyright with the law school for Public Domain Day and Wikipedia Day in January 2019. We anticipate holding Wikidata workshops or other partnerships with them.

Hello Discott, thank you for submitting this comprehensive report. It’s great to see that you’ve achieved most of your initial goals having a productive travel. I have a few comments and questions regarding your report.

• Have you been able to collect additional copyright user rights results for other countries and to add more tables on the produced matrix?
• What about the data processing? Have you accomplished the data processing and decided upon the best ways of visualising the matrix?
• Please note that according to the recent changes in the Rapid Grants Program, we no longer provide Rapid Grants for travel support.

Hi DSaroyan (WMF), Thanks for the feedback. In answer to your questions.

• Sadly no. It seems the team of legal scholars I was teamed with has, for the time being, lost interest in this. However I view this as an ongoing project and one that I intend to pick up on gain and continue to expand. It would be a great shame to drop it now when we have already done quite a bit to it. Sadily I it looks unlikley that I will be able to go to the next Global Congress to pick this up again (hopefully that will change) but I do intent to still persue this.
• Nope, not yet. Although I should give that a go now that I have a few data points to fill in on this. I was intending to wait for more countries but the ones I have should be enough.
• Noted, thanks for the heads up.

An additional update is that coming from this event Peter Meyer (Wikimedia DC) and I learnt about CopyrightX and have been enrolled to learn more about Copyright law. The WMF legal team has very kindly offered us a few moments of their time a week to answer any questions we might have during our studies.
