Grants talk:Programs/Wikimedia Research Fund/Investigating Neurodivergent Wikimedian Experiences

If possible, please keep your input concise. We'd particularly like feedback on the following questions:

  1. From what perspective or in what role are you providing your input? (For example: a Wikipedia editor, a representative of a Wikimedia chapter, a member of a regional committee)
  2. In what ways do you think this research can support members of the Wikimedia communities in their work on Wikimedia projects?
  3. Is there a particular project or affiliate in your country/region/project that can benefit from the result of this research and/or you recommend that the applicants seek to coordinate or collaborate with? If so, please provide details including the name of the project or affiliate and a short description of the relevance of the proposal to the needs of the affiliate or project.
  4. Do you have any other comments or feedback you would like to share with the Research Fund chairs?

I have read the proposal and I think that this is a really important subject to work on. The documentation of neurodiverse experiences will help create alternative ways of communication and really help the movement in the long run, I believe that this research can start that process! I am a Wikipedia editor from a minority community and a member of Wikimedia NYC. My feedback comes from a specific perspective rooted in the experiences of a minority contributor. I believe the community impact of this project is particularly significant. As the applicants mention, clear insights into the strengths and challenges faced by neurodivergent Wikimedians can inform policies, guidelines, and community practices, fostering an environment that accommodates diverse perspectives and abilities. This is a really important and missing topic in current research, because it's linked to that of the contribution of autistic people to the economy. If you do a Google Scholar or Semantic Scholar search, you'll find hundreds of publications about the economic cost of autistic people, and nothing, really nothing, about their contribution to the economy (or maybe you should read Steve Silberman's essay, but that's not a scientific publication).

I think it's really crucial to support research in this area, because the idea that autistic people are a cost to society feeds eugenicist public policies. Tsaag Valren (talk) 09:34, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
