As part of the community, as a feminist, as an engaged host of Edit-a-thons in the context of Art+Feminism, our own project Who writes his_tory?, and co-founder of FemNetz (a German speaking feminist network-group) I highly recommend to support the scientific research. To achieve the Wikimedia Movement´s 2030 strategy, I see the scientific support of the community, as an important part of the way, as the community lacks time and budget to generate well-funded numbers.
I strongly endorse this project, because gender bias awareness is needed to communicate the situtation to Wikipedians and the public at large. Cover pages have a high visibility (perhaps not a strong impact, but they are visually communicative) so gender biases have a direct effect on public awareness of gender, especially when cover pages ofter show biographies of leading people or deal with key issues of the present world that involve leading people.
As a member of a research group concerned about the gender gap on Wikipedia, I consider a project like this to be fundamental. The cover/ Main page of Wikipedia is one of the most visited pages on the internet, as well as the "welcome" space of the Wikipedia community to all readers. I believe it is a key space to improve in terms of bridging the existing gaps, to ensure that Wikipedia provides a representation as diverse as the world to which it belongs.
