This proposal is very important so that the Malay language can continue to be preserved. With this grant, it is hoped that the Malay language can continue to develop, especially in the educational aspect.

Reply

Feedback from the ESEAP regional funds review team edit

Hello Lim_Natee, thanks for submitting this Rapid Fund request. The ESEAP funds regional team has reviewed your application and we have the following comments and requests:

The ESEAP funds regional team has reviewed your application and we have the following comments and requests:

Main proposal:

  • We think that the proposal is interesting with clear goals and objectives. We appreciate that this can be a collaborative project between two communities – Bandung and Indonesian communities, focusing on two Wikimedia projects – Wiktionary and Wikisource.
  • Since you and User:Agus_Damanik are already involved in another recently funded project, we request that the start date of this grant be moved after the end date of the WikiMaleyu project on 31 December 2023. Please note that individuals can have only one open Rapid Fund at a given time. It seems that you are working as a team and applying for different individual grants with the same team is not acceptable. You need to either form a group and apply as a group or complete your ongoing project before applying for new funding. (questions 2 and 3)
  • Please clarify more about the status of Bahasa Melayu Medan and also the native community in Wikimedia projects and their opinions to improve the language in Wikimedia projects. (question 7)
  • We request that you reach out to all relevant communities in advance, inform them about this project and hear their feedback. However, you have not reached out to any communities on or off wiki. Our request is to reach out to them, including any affiliates in the region – Wikimedia Indonesia and Wikimedia Malaysia and communities of the target Wikimedia projects. It would be great to get endorsements from these affiliates. This step is crucial to move forward with the review process. We are making an exception and reviewing the grant this time. But in the future applications that are not properly discussed and communicated with the community will not be reviewed. (question 11)
  • Are you interested in incorporating some aspects of the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts project in your workshop? (question 7)
  • How do you plan to measure the success of the project and challenges that participants may face? (question 9)
  • In your proposal, you requested compensation for project assistant and project manager. It should be clear why you are offering compensation for these roles. What activities will be covered by these roles that are impossible to cover by volunteer efforts? (question 8)
  • Could you also clarify what connection this proposal has to Wikimedia Malaysia? Did you consider taling to them and including it in their annual plan? (question 7)

We have sent the application back to you to add your responses to the corresponding questions on the original application in Grantee Portal (Fluxx). You have received an automated email with instructions. Please complete this by October 13, 2023.

Thanks again for your contribution and time. DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 09:33, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Feedback reply edit

Halo DSaroyan (WMF), thank you for the feedback. I will answer your questions in the list below in order:
  • We are very open to collaborating, but in this case, we feel it is not appropriate to do so. because, the activities we will be doing are quite busy too, considering that we are also workers and students who don't have enough time. and also the initial aim was to elevate the Malay language again through Malay manuscripts and to record Malay vocabulary in North Sumatra, Indonesia, especially Deli Malay or Medan Malay which is currently in serious danger of being lost. and we also know that there are many Malay manuscripts that not many people know about and many people can no longer read them clearly and we know that Bandung has its own script and language, namely Sundanese. So, in this case, we are only collaborating with WCUGM (Wikimedia Malaysia) in promoting the Malay language again, and with the Banjar community and Unsri Wiki Club as a place to carry out the workshop that we will hold later.
  • Although we belong to the same community, our scope of the project differed significantly. We volunteered solely to assist with the workshop and ended up becoming the model for it. Outside of this, we were not engaged in documenting or recording the culture, nor did we receive any payment for our involvement except transport and consumption. However, if you still consider us part of the same team, I am more than willing to accept that designation. It can serve as a valuable lesson for our movement in Indonesia, encouraging us to be mindful of such distinctions in the future. We agree with the delay, though maybe it will just jeopardize our timeline because this proposal takes into account the academic year of Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • The status of Bahasa Melayu Medan or Melayu Deli is a matter of concern as it faces endangerment due to the absence of mandatory lessons which Agus were taught in the past as a Medan citizen, particularly those using Arabic malay script, in schools. You can refer to this news article for (https://nasional.kompas.com/read/2008/06/24/01213865/penutur-berstrata-sosial-tinggi-cenderung-berbicara-lirih) more details, even though it is in Indonesian. Lim, who has a Bachelor's degree in Malay Language, is the individual behind the initiative to address this issue because he usually talks with the native community and he is also the contact person for Komunitas Wikimedia Medan who manage native community of Wikimedia in North Sumatera.
  • Like we said in the proposal, we have actively engaged with the community, particularly Komunitas Wikimedia Medan and Komunitas Wikisource Indonesia, by participating in their monthly meetings to discuss the project's details and garner their input. While we won't include document links in the proposal cause it can be only accessed by the member. But, you can look at the summary in this link (https://id.wikimedia.org/wiki/Rapat_Komunitas/Dokumentasi_aktivitas_GSF23). Additionally, we have held Zoom meetings with Wikimedia Malaysia as part of our collaborative efforts and have communicated with Wikimedia Indonesia through their community coordinator to ensure that all relevant parties are informed and engaged.
  • We would be open to incorporating their aspects into our project, but I'm hesitant to reach out to them because their program has historically not involved our community, particularly Komunitas Wikisource Indonesia. Ethically, it would be more appropriate for them to seek the community's input before initiating their project.
  • We will do some kind of evaluation after the event by using likert scale to evaluate this.
  • The project manager will handle partnership discussions, create presentation materials, and serve as the main communicator with participants from Malaysia, speaking in Malay during interactions, prepare the malay arabic keyboard and managing the project to be going well. The project officer will assist in conducting surveys, doing the presentation how to edit, processing the survey data, managing financial matters, preparing presentation materials, and creating Wikisource tutorials for arabic malay script. As you're aware, Agus have previously undertaken similar training initiatives under his previous grant, volunteering his time without compensation. Upon reflection, he have come to realize that the tasks involved, such as creating lesson plans, presentation materials, survey collection, reviews, and financial management, consume a significant amount of time and effort, especially since it usually takes his work hours and paid leave. While I don't expect substantial compensation, even a nominal payment to reflect minimum wage would be fair. His realization stems from his observation during working full time for Wikimedia Indonesia, where he noticed that individuals undertaking similar tasks receive relatively high compensation. It has led me to question whether it is reasonable for us not to be compensated for this work, even if it's at a minimum wage level.
  • As mentioned earlier, we have already held a Zoom meeting with Wikimedia Malaysia, during which we reached a mutual agreement. This agreement entails them including the budget for their flight expenses and accommodations in Medan, while we will cover the costs of consumption and room rentals for the workshop. In a reciprocal manner, Wikimedia Malaysia has committed to providing similar support for our activities in Malaysia. Thank you. Lim Natee (talk) 15:43, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
