Follow-up Questions from ESEAP Regional Funds Committee and Programme Officer edit

Hello @Alphama,

Thank you for your interest in the rapid fund programme. Your grant application is currently in the eligibility check phase led by the WMF grants administration team. We have also started the proposal review process in parallel. Would you be able to provide responses to the following questions? Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Jacqueline on behalf of the ESEAP Funds Committee

Implementation plan

1) How do you plan to attract more interest as well as members and participants for your proposed project? Based on the shared links, we gathered there is one participant who has signed up thus far.

I am opening a call to attract more participants to the project here. I also posted the challenge call to several Vietnamese projects such as Wikibooks, Wikisource, and Wikiquote. Later, I will update the participant list.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

2) Will the budget of the project enable you to accommodate more than 5 members to participate?

Yes, of course; at the beginning, I was afraid that not many people would pay attention to the proposal, so I set a modest number of 5 participants. However, the more participants, the more outcomes we have.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

3) What methods are you going to use to identify unknown species (animal, insects, plant) from the national park?

Basically, we use Google Images and Google Lens to search for similar images on the Internet, and then we compare features from the results and the input to infer the scientific names of organisms. I used this method for all my images uploaded to Wiki Commons, [1].  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

4) a) Would you be able to share a list of potential participants? b) Could you provide more clarity about the internet budget? (for example: is it a prize for people who have a good photo? or is it for all participants (5 people) and for how long (months)?) c) Could you give more clarity about the activity/ implementation timeline for your project d) Do you have a list of the places you plan to visit?

a) Alphama, NhacNy2412, LĐK, updating... [2]
b) Each participant has the same budget, 800 USD/person, including Internet (4G), entrance tickets, and commute fees. We do not want to make people rush to take as many photos instead of focusing on the quality.
c) The challenge will take two months. Each participant will go to locations (national parks, biological gardens, etc.) nearest their living place to take photos. After that, they must manually label photos with names, scientific names, descriptions, and categories using Google Images. Then, upload them to Wiki Commons and keep a file log on Wiki Commons (usually their user pages). Finally, all photos must be cross-checked by the other participants before ending the challenge.
d) Because our participants are from everywhere, we have no fixed list of places they will go.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

5) Would you consider (a) arranging a workshop on Freedom of Panorama (FOP) before the visiting day. b) Create a survey about Freedom of Panorama (FOP) to see what people learn from this program and adding this to your project metrics?

a) I will open a discussion in both our group and in Wiki Commons ([3]) to guide the participants about the FOP.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
b) I am not sure; I am afraid not so many people pay attention to the survey, but I will try this.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Learning and reflection

6) Given your past experience in leading two other projects (Improve the vital articles in Vietnamese Wikipedia and Semi-automatically generate Categories for Vietnamese Wikipedia), what are learnings that you can apply to organising this photo contest? Are there areas of support you require to organise and run this photo contest well? If yes, what are they and how can we support you?

My two previous projects taught me that an equal budget makes everyone happier and engages best in the project instead of using quantities when chasing the prizes. This also avoids conflicts between participants in deciding who wins the challenge and the arguments of challenge criteria. Furthermore, starting the challenge soon and controlling participant activities every week is better to finish the challenge on time.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

7) How do you envision this project will contribute to building a more active offline community? JChen (WMF) (talk) 04:34, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I hope this challenge will make participants understand more about FOP and the locations they live in through photo activities, and they may also attract more people in their surroundings to participate in Wiki Commons. The challenge also provides scientific value to capturing photos of Vietnam's flora and fauna population. This may be an indirect form to encourage related research.  A l p h a m a  Talk 05:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
