Grants talk:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Outreach, awareness and edit a thon at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State, Nigeria (ID: 21900677)

Endorsment from Olugold (talk) edit

This project is important for my community and the university community because it will further educate or inform my community of Wikimedia Foundation and her projects. Most members of my community, see WMF as just Wikipedia and some do not know what WMF is. The strategies will achieve expected results and encourage participation to WMF projects because the perceptions of community Members will change due to the information that will be passed across during sensitization and during the event.

  •   Strong support: Therefore, I strongly support and endorse this project.

This project is going to widen the Wikimedia community in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The inter-faculty training approach is a strategy to capture people with different backgrounds, who with time would take interests in contributing to the various Wikimedia projects that interests them beyond Wikipedia, hereby encouraging diversified projects. I support this amazing initiative.   Strong support --Ceslause (talk) 10:21, 1 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Awareness projects such as this, are projects that needs to be encouraged more in order to get more people involved. I'm a strong advocate for Wikidata and any project that is focused on increasing the number of Wikidata contributors in my community is something I will gladly support and I feel is approach and position in the institution increases the odds of achieving all the goals set out particularly increasing the number of Wikimedia contributors.

I endorse this project --Udehb (talk) 11:51, 8 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

This project is a nice one because it will be a medium of creating sensitization and involving volunteers from my community who do not really have a better understanding of how WMF works. The strategies adopted for this program will achieve expected results.

Comments from MEA regional funds committee and staff edit

Hi Kingsley Nkem, thank you for submitting your grant application. After reviewing your grant proposal, we have some questions to learn more about the project and planned activities.

  • Please update the grant start date. The earliest start date for projects in the July-August Rapid Fund cycle is August 28, 2022. Additionally, how do you plan to run these activities given that there is a nation-wide strike in the universities of Nigeria? We request that you update the project start and end dates to be after the strike (question N & O).
  • Are you aware of all technical issues that you can face during a large Wikimedia event? Do you have team members who can address potential technical challenges, e.g. IP block, registration limits? Please mention these details in question 5.
  • What are your strategies of training 100 participants in a single event? From our experience, training so many participants during an event can be really difficult. Please confirm that you will split the group into smaller groups and work with them separately to achieve a better impact. Update question 3.
  • Is there a particular theme for images to be uploaded on commons? Add this details to question 3.
  • Since this is a university event, we request that you talk to the university and consider requesting the space for free or with a discount. We will not fund 301.48 USD space for each day.
  • Please provide more information about row 10 in the budget.
  • Remove Big background banner expenses. We will only fund 1 roll up banner for this project.
  • Please update the total requested budget. on Fluxx.

Please make indicated changes on Fluxx. Please log in to the Grantee Portal and you will see your application in the 'Proposals need attention' section. Please edit and re-submit your application by August 14, 2022. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks for your time, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:27, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@DSaroyan (WMF): The Grant start and end dates has been updated accordingly.
On the strike, I am fully aware of the strike in the University. Our program is planned to practically commence immediately the strike is suspended. Being a member of the staff union of the University, I anticipate the strike will be suspended by the end of this month, August 2022. As a result of this, I am moving the project start date to the last week of September. While we await the suspension of the strike, myself and my team will commence pre-event discussions and meetings with the necessary faculty and departmental Heads as stated on my grant application. This will enable us keep up with our proposed dates. I can reach these faculty and departmental Heads via our university communication channels and fix meeting appointments.
Yes, I am aware of such technical issues that could arise during such events being that I have facilitated a number of physical Wiki events as well. In this case, we just have a larger number of participants. I will split the participants into groups. Each group will have an experienced editor to assist them while the training is ongoing. This will also enable me pay adequate attention to them. For the registration, I will get the participants to register individually at home days before the event. I will also write to the Administrators informing them of the event to avoid IP block challenges.
The images to be uploaded on Wikicommons are cultural related images and audio pronunciation of local Nigerian names.
About the cost of venue, there are cheaper venues within the University community but I chose not to go for them due to the space, structure and arrangements of these venues. Some of them may not help me achieve the sitting arrangements planned for this project in order to have maximum impact on participants. I also took into consideration comfortability of participants and a venue which would help get the best of the friendly space policy within the University. However, I requested for a discount on the cost and was granted some percentage discount (30%) which I have effected on the grant budget.
On row 10 of the budget, I noticed that the first column of the budget sheet is totally off. That's why the information on row 10 seems incomplete. I have updated the budget with the missing column now included.
I have also removed the big banner expenses and updated the budget accordingly.
Thank you. Kingsley Nkem (talk) 12:54, 10 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
