Grants talk:Programs/Wikimedia Alliances Fund/Making local history more accessible for teachers in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

  • Support Support I support this grant application. Auckland Museum has demonstrated that it can deliver on its proposals and this application outlines the next step in their strategic programme of work. If granted this funding will substantially improve the quality of articles for the Auckland making them more useful for the education community of Auckland. This application aligns well with one of the goals of the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand to support the training and development of a community of editors from the Auckland area so that regular meetups are established. The growth of the editor pool in Aoteaora New Zealand is also likely to see a growth in the pool of organisers in the Auckland area. This will benefit the Wikimedia movement in New Zealand. • Support Support It's good to see Auckland Museum continue to engage with Wikimedia Movement in new ways; it's the most progressive institution in New Zealand in this respect. What's exciting for me about this project is its focus on schools, and internships for students to work with Wikipedia. This, if supported by an increasingly-organised editor community in Auckland, will mean a real shift in the demographics of Wikipedia editing in New Zealand. It will be important for the Museum to work closely with experienced editors in Auckland and further abroad to make sure the students are well supported; they are effectively paid editors so will come under extra scrutiny and will need a clear Memorandum of Understanding or contract to avoid accusations of COI. I'm sure this is doable and I've offered to support the Museum in this. We've seen positive results both in strength of the editing community and improved gender balance from the Wikipedian at Large project a few years back, and this similarly-substantial grant looks like it could have a comparable impact. Building a relationship with schools and leveraging off the changes in the history curriculum is novel and welcome; I hope that there's continued involvement of Wiki Education (expertise, resources) in the project. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 07:51, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

[Update] Alliances Fund Application - Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland War Memorial Museum edit

Hello Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland War Memorial Museum,

Thank you for your time and effort in submitting an application for the Wikimedia Alliances Fund.

It was a pleasure getting to know you, your colleagues and the collective work of all who came before (e.g wikipedian in residence, wikipedian at large etc) across the wider wikimedia and open knowledge community in New Zealand.

The ESEAP funds committee has completed the deliberation rounds. Your proposal was not shortlisted for an award in this funding cycle. This was a competitive open grants call for the Alliances Fund grant programme in the ESEAP region. We received a total of USD 413K in grant requests from 6 mission aligned organisations and were able to award about USD 145K to 3 organisations.

The proposals that were shortlisted for an award rated highly across:

  • Impact potential and strategic alignment
  • Organisational capacity and budget
  • Community engagement and newcomer participation
  • Learning and evaluation

While we are not able to support your project at this time, we encourage you to put in an application in the next grant cycle. In your next grant application (due 29 September 2022), it would be useful to consider:

  • having an in-depth discussion with Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand, to learn more about their strategic work plan and priorities and explore how you can contribute to the collective vision of a thriving Wikimedia community in New Zealand
  • reduced scope of activities (i.e. focus on key partners and networks you would like to grow) and build depth

We hope to continue to stay connected and look forward to further conversations about your future work/ application.

On behalf of the ESEAP Funds Committee, JChen (WMF) (talk) 09:31, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
