Five years ago (oh, my ;) I had mentored a project to create a plugin to embed Wikimedia Commons files in WordPress − see mw:Wikimedia Commons on WordPress (itself inspired by PhotosCommons by User:Husky.

GLAM interest edit
This would be something of interest to the GLAM sector. Frequently, museums/libraries are interested in embedding snippets of WP articles into their catalogue descriptions of individual items of the collection (either the WP article about the item itself) or about a broader topic (e.g. the artistic style or the artist...). An example is that w:Trove, the national historic digitised newspaper service displays snippets of the relevant WP article about each newspaper title. Here's the w:Sydney Morning Herald for example: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/title/35 The creation of these articles has also been a part of the activities of the State Library of New South Wales as part of their contract for Trove with the National Library - as described here: Wikipedia:GLAM/State_Library_of_New_South_Wales/The_Newspaper_Project.
Other GLAMs have sometimes expressed an interest in using WP as a way to make their website content accessible to people from language groups that the staff don't speak (e.g. a small volunteer run museum in country x that doesn't have the capacity to translate its website content but would nevertheless like to show something to visitors from neighbouring country y on their website. During the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey I proposed a revamp of all the re-use services that we offer - of which embed functions are a part. This was, entirely understandably, not a very popular idea for that survey - given its 're-user' focused rather than 'editor' focused. However, I still think it is something someone (from the 'reading' team?) might like to look at.
The proposal is called Cite : Share : Export and basically calls for the consolidation of all the various ways that we allow people to re-use content (with all the haphazardly findable methods to use them) into a single 'wizard' accessed from the sidebar. When clicked, the various options for re-use would appear, grouped, and community-controllable as to what is included and in what order. This would also allow different communities to include social media links according to local consensus. In my original proposal I didn't think about 'embed codes' as one of the options, but it certainly fits. Please have a look at either the Phabricator task or the Meta link (both above) and see whether you think the Embedding proposal could be rolled into this in general. Progress on image tags for sharing via social media and other apps. edit
A small update on work happening related to this idea. Ladsgroup recently submitted an update to image tags that should reach Wikipedia in the next few weeks. According to Amir, "This also fixes issues in WhatsApp, Telegram, and other social networks, messaging apps too. Also this fixes preview for Wikidata as well"
