Grants talk:IEG/Upload from context

editUploading involves both, technical and legal challenges. Simply drag&dop will not do the job for Wikimedia Wikis. The files will need descriptions, tags or categories and proper copyright information.
We do already have the utterly complex Upload Wizard. I know what I am talking about as I am administrator at Wikimedia Commons, the central file archive, for 2 years and submitted proposals for patches to Upload Wizard and investigated issues, listened to community members at Commons:Upload help, Commons:Village pump, Commons:Forum, Commons:Village pump and Commons:Help desk.
My proposal is to make Upload Wizard compatible with Visual Editor (e.g by offering a special UI for VE). Upload Wizard is by design highly encapsulated, which allows running it nearly everywhere. Keeping the upload-logic central will reduce maintenance efforts, which involves the technical aspect of uploading as well as its configuration (choice of licenses, for example). -- Rillke (talk) 09:11, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. My idea of this project came from zoomin.com, if you ever try using this website to upload images there you would see that they have a really nice interface which would pop-up and also allow features like tagging, categorizing, etc within that pop-up. I have myself been a contributor to Upload Wizard and know the complexities that it has but than its a challenge to make this feature which is really wanted by lots. Improving UW is a good idea, but that too needs a lot of effort and sometimes going from scratch might be easier. I don't know how you want to integrate it with VE though, but that's too a plausible opinion. I would also let you know that soon after I made this proposal I figured it has a high chances of rejection because it might need help from WMF engineers, that discouraged me and I haven't updated the whole thing since then.--Nischayn22 (talk) 09:29, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
