Project summary edit

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • This project is a local photowalk to support the Wiki Loves Earth Campaign in Nigeria while engaging volunteer members of the community in a series of activities. We will embark on a photowalk to Lagwa Monkey Colony/Haven in Aboh Mbaise, LGA, Imo State.Lagwa Monkey Colony is a popular haven where monkeys have lived side by side with the natives for the past 300 years. In Nigeria and Africa at large, wild animals including monkeys are usually ill-treated resulting in the said animals fleeing their natural habitat to safer alternatives. However, the experience is different in the Lagwa community where monkeys are respected and have been preserved from inception. There is also a cultural practice that forbids people to harm, kill or eat the monkeys thereby putting the community on the world map. The monkey specie, Preuss guenon is a large semi-terrestrial monkey found only in South East Nigeria, Cross River State, South West Cameroon and on the island of Bioko. It is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Scope of the Project edit

Currently, this story of this monkey haven is missing on wikimedia projects. Hence, this photowalk will focus on pictorial storytelling of the state of the animal's habitat, the animals, how community people relate with it and vice versa as well as other interesting things we will see in the location.
