Project goal and measures of success

edit

Project goal

edit

The Second Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit was successfully hosted in Santiago, with a total assistance of 23 international participants, only one representative from Portugal and one from Uruguay faced last-minute problems and couldn't attend the event. All the scheduled events were hosted as planned, only with minimal adjusts reflecting the interest of discussion of the participants.

The event was a great opportunity to discuss different subjects and, for the first time, it included members of the Wikimedia Foundation talking openly in Spanish/Portuguese, increasing the confidence between the WMF and Ibero American chapters and the opportunities for collaboration between all of them.

For the first time, people from Panama and Peru attended to a Wikimedia event like this.

Measures of success

edit

Besides the success of the organization of the event itself, there were other measures regarding the outcomes of the event itself:

  • A declaration was produced by the participating groups in the events, summarizing the topics discussed and guiding the path of Iberocoop members in the path.
  • A common strategy on Education was not able to be established because it wasn't enough time for it, although the participants agreed to work towards a plan openly on a wiki.
  • Five new countries agreed to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Panama), supporting each other.

Lessons learned

edit

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects?

As Iberocoop and its members have grown in the past year, their experience have increased in different subjects and that makes much more difficult to host an event with a lot of topics. Probably in the following years, Iberoconf should have a main topic to discuss (probably, a whole day) and smaller talks for different topics.

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?

Wikimedia's presence in Latin America will be increased with the development of chapters in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay and support for new Wikimedia groups in Panama and Peru. Workshop of communication and social networks will help chapters and other groups to promote their activities and from the Wikimedia Foundation in a more effective way.

Participation in Wiki Loves Monuments in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Panama will increase the number of participants and images in Wikimedia Commons, reaching to a new audience (especially interested in photography). Also, the development of projects in native languages will be helpful to incorporate new communities of indigenous people, usually excluded or discriminated. Shared experiences with GLAM instutitions will help to increase quality and credibitily in those countries with younger groups.
