Proposed participation
editI would like to present my research work on how Wikibooks and Wikijunior are used as platforms for collaborative writing and editing open-content textbooks. In this initiative, I would like to provide insights into the collaborative perspective of writing Wikibooks, guides in contributing to Wikibooks and Wikijunior, editing Wikibooks and discusses the initiatives on engaging active readers, approaches to attract more online readers and encouraging university students to the creation of contents in Wikibooks.
My involvement in OpenSym 2016 will also includes showcasing examples on how to use collaborative tools in Wikibooks such as Wikibooks User Page, Wikibooks Discussion Page, Wikibooks Reading Room to foster collaboration of authors from diverse expertise in Wikibooks and Wikijunior. Besides, I would also like to demonstrate the use of Wikibooks facilitation tools such as Wikibooks Sandbox, Template Sandbox that are useful for Wikibooks editors and writers.
I would like to walk-through the attendees with my blog entitled "wikibookians – I love Wikibooks!" which is an initiative that is used to engage wider audiences of Wikibooks and Wikijunior. The blog post ideas/topics are chosen mainly based on key areas of inspiration such as seasonal topics, holidays and occasions.
Featured books in Wikibooks and Wikijunior are chosen to complement the blog post initiative such as blog post: Earth Day Book for Children in Wikijunior with the featured book: Wikijunior:Solar System as well as reaching out to more Wikibookians and worldwide writers during Easter to join Wikijunior in this blog post: Helping out in Wikijunior!
Goal and expected impact
editBy attending the OpenSym 2016 conference, I would like to share my experiences and challenges of using Wikibooks tools to contribute in the writing and editing of Wikibooks and I would also encourage other Wikibookians/attendees to document their efforts and describes their approach undertaken using social media to reach more audiences. Additionally, I wish to establish discussions with other attendees, demonstrate the potential value of Wikibooks tools and encourage other Wikibooks users to maintain continued interest in writing/editing content in Wikibooks.
