Proposed participation

edit

How will your participation at this event further the Wikimedia Mission?

My name is Ean Teng, Khor. I am the co-author of the paper "Strategies for Promoting OER in Course Development and Course Delivery in ODL Environment" with Sheng Hung, Chung. I am currently a researcher and OER academic team member who responsible for the delivery of the OER courses using moodle-Wikis approach to cater for adult learners in distance learning environment. I wish to seek partial support to attend the OpenSym 2014 conference to deliver joint presentation for the research study of moodle-Wikis approach. I am responsible for conducting the OER course delivery using collaborative learning Wikis approach for Open Distance Learning (ODL) learners. The course delivery is carried out by using moodle-Wikis methodology aiming to promote virtual collaborative tool through integration of Wikis in the moodle-based Learning Management Systems (LMS) platform. I would like to present the results and observations during the talks focusing on the ODL learners' contributions on the moodle-Wikis pages throughout the semesters. I wish to also highlight the positive engagement and reflecting the knowledge creation process of ODL learners who have undergone the moodle-Wikis courses delivery during my talk. I wish to also share the moodle-Wikis experiences in generating problem solving strategies among ODL learners and the challenges faced during our Wikis effort. In the present study, collaborative learning such as Wikis group lecture notes, individual Wikis and Wikis brainstorming are introduced to student groups in the LMS to emerge the work of learners. The presentation of this study is hope to further demonstrate the benefits of Wikis in collaborative distance learning environment, raise awareness of collaborative environment specifically on Wikis environment and encourage ODL participants in contributing to other Wikis pages during the semester.

Goal and expected impact

edit

What will be accomplished if your participation is successful?

The moodle-Wikis approach aims to solve the major hurdle of pure ODL learning environment which lacks of instructor-learner interactions and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. I would like to share the Wikis in moodle practices (demonstration of setting up Wikis in Moodle) and explore opportunities of research collaboration with other participants from diverse institutions by introducing the moodle-Wikis initiative to increase interactions, knowledge sharing among peers specifically through student-centered approach, instructor-learner interactions in enhancing learning activities via distance learning course delivery process. In addition, I would like to deliver the demonstration of creating Wikis activity, navigating between multiple Wikis pages, accessing shared files and direct the audiences to the respective moodle-Wikis documentation for careful guidance. The proposed joint presentation enable us to gain feedbacks on the use of Wikis as a powerful tool and primary use for distance learning collaborative works.
