Proposed Participation

edit

I manage web and social media at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and am actively trying to increase our relationship with the Wikipedia community and add content about our collections to Wikipedia articles. I have hosted one edit-a-thon at the Smithsonian American Art Museum so far (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Masterpiece_Museum_edit-a-thon), and have another one on Friday, Feb 15 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Civil_War). The Museum is committed to hosting up to four edit-a-thons per year based around our collections, research, and scholarship. Attending the OpenGLAM launch will benefit me professionally within the Smithsonian Institution as it will help me talk about, advocate for, and support all Wikipedia activities at my museum as well as other Smithsonian museums. It will also benefit me as a volunteer within the Wikipedia community - helping me both as an editor and edit-a-thon host. The discussion of creative commons licensing and case studies from other GLAMS will be of particular benefit, as will meeting Wikipedia volunteers from other museums.

Goal and Expected Impact

edit

As a result of my attending this event, I will be better able to advocate for Wikipedia projects within the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian Institution as a whole. It will provide me with relevant examples of projects from museum, libraries, and galleries across the country, and will connect me with potential partners in future collaborative Wikipedia projects. I also hope to learn how to be a better editor, and gain insights into running successful edit-a-thons and other Wikipedia-related events at my institution.
