Request approved edit

I am approving this request to reallocate £7950 (£3,750 + £4,200 per table above) from junior developer to senior developer, and £5,475 (£6,775-£1,300 per table above) from developer to senior developer. If the figures I've indicated are not correct, please revise your budget change request language to reflect the exact amounts of the reallocation and I will approve.

Hi Marti, that's broadly correct; I've added a table to our budget change request so that you have full details of what we'd like to do differently. Hope it's all clear!

Budget change request 15th May 2018 edit

There are two broad changes we are making that affect the budget to utilise the remaining £21,910 committed spend from the remaining Wikimedia Grant funds and mySociety committed funds. We are proposing to extend the project until the end of July and have had to shift around some of the staff costs to reflect this.

1. As we have not been able to spend as much on in-person events as we would have like we are proposing to reallocate this time to online missions supported by our new Community Manager.

The £4,988 Community Events and £4,848 International Community Events (£9,835 combined) is reduced to £1,200 for Events and the remaining £8,635 is allocated to Community Manager for online events instead.

2. We wish to reallocate the Partnership Manager budget (who is no longer available on the project) to verification tools development instead that will allow us to make these available more generally within Wikidata - this means we will reallocate budget to Delivery Manager and more Developer time instead.

The £8,550 Partnership Manager fee and £3,525 Senior Developer budget moves to £3,525 Delivery Manager, £2,900 Senior Developer, and £5,650 Developer.

Rationale edit

Over the course of this project we have learned a significant amount about how best to work with other contributors in order to support their work to increase the depth of detail and quality of data available in dozens of countries. We now have over 40 countries in some stage of progress but it has taken us longer than expected to help get most of these countries to a more complete state.

Now that Georgie Burr has joined mySociety as a Community Manager, we'd like to extend the project until at least the end of July 2018 so that we can benefit from all of her expertise. During this extended period we will help run online missions for contributors to complete more detail on more countries. We will also extend the development of our verification tools to make it easier for anyone to verify externally available datasets with what is contained on Wikidata.

Request approved edit

I am approving this request to:

  • extend the project until the end of July 2018,
  • use the £9,835 for Community Events for the Community Manager to lead online events(£8,635) and the remainder (£1,200) for offline events,
  • reallocate the Partnership Manager budget to verification tools development (Delivery Manager and Developer time).

And welcome to Georgie Burr! I'm looking forward to learning from your online outreach work! There are many technically oriented proposals that suffer on the community engagement side of the project, and I'm especially interested to see what strategies you find effective for online engagement. I hope you'll document your learnings about what does and doesn't work in the Final Report for this project.  :-)

I'm notifying our Grants Administrator about this change. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
