How to cross pollinate Wikiup content with Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects so that the information on Wikiup can be included in multiple Wikis and vice versa where using Wikimedia APIs Wikiup can incorporate content from Wikipedia and other Wikis. There is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed and that is how to develop best practices for references and citations for Indigenous Knowledge as much of the knowledge is oral.

There are approximately 370 million Indigenous people in the world, belonging to 5,000 different groups, in 90 countries worldwide. Although Wikiup is a Canadian initiative the goal is that it will become a global network. In Canada there are over 600 First Nations plus the various Métis and Inuit groups and so the only way to address the enormity of the story catching and story telling challenge is to somehow automate some of the data collecting and sharing process through API integration. Due to the fact that traditional knowledge is often oral the best way to address this challenge is to work with Indigenous communities and Knowledge Holders to develop best practices and rules of conduct and attribution that is culturally appropriate.

Develop best practices for collecting, attributing, and receiving permission for the sharing of Indigenous traditional knowledge.
Creating an automated means of cross pollinating content between Wikiup and Wikimedia projects and platforms.
Creating a means for Indigenous Knowledge Holders to participate in the development of the best practices for the inclusion of TK on digital networks.

How will you know if you have met your goals? edit
For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). We will invite individuals/groups working in the field of collecting and sharing Indigenous Knowledge to form a working group (approx. 10 to 12 people to be manageable) and in turn work with their local/community partners to help define best practices. Each of the ten to twelve individuals/groups would work with four to six Nations/Indigenous groups.)
We will engage a small software development team to define the best first steps in incorporating Wikimedia APIs into the Wikiup framework. We will put out a call to fellow Wiki-medians for input on options and best approaches to cross pollinate data between Wikiup and Wikipedia/WikiData and other Wikis. We will hire one or two programmers to integrate the APIs.
As to outcome measuremen: Our goal is that within one year this Indigenous Knowledge Network will have a few hundred regular contributors and that there will be two to three thousand story markers placed across Canada. The goal is to generate at least 500 new story markers that will be automatically uploaded through the APIs and be shared on Wikipedia and other Wikis.

As per above - we hope to attract existing Wikipedians as contributors to Wikiup but also (particularly in our school outreach) to encourage Indigenous youth to become Wikipedians and add to the free knowledge movement as it relates to their Nation or culture.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
We will work with schools, Nations, Indigenous groups and community organizations to explore best practices for Indigenous Knowledge sharing and to continually expand and populate the network. The project goal is to build a user-friendly, culturally appropriate system that will attract users to continually add content to this network. The Wikiup team will use surveys, questionnaires, media releases and newsletters to stay in touch with contributors and visitors alike.

VNHS is a member of the Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Executive Council and is connected to a host of service and cultural organizations serving the urban Indigenous community. Part of the story catching process is to tell the stories of all of the members of MVAEC as well as other community organizations that serve the Indigenous community. VNHS has strong connections to scores of Nations through its board and executive. Additionally the Society works with the Vancouver School Board and its Aboriginal Educators. This relationship can be repeated with other Indigenous housing societies who in turn are connected to their local school boards

Stewart Anderson - Vancity Credit Union In his current role as Manager, Indigenous Partnerships, Stewart works to broaden and deepen the Credit Union’s involvement with Aboriginal communities in and beyond the traditional territory of the Coast Salish people where Vancity is located. Stewart is connected with scores of Indigenous groups and will be instrumental in helping us engage local, regional and national players. Vancity has invested in and continues to support Wikiup.

Support - As a contributor to the Haitian Wikipedya, I am excited about the possibility of capturing the oral traditions of the indigenous people of Haiti. There is very little literature available at this time and I am concerned that some of it may have been destroyed in the last earthquake, making the need for this project important.
