This proposal aims to facilitate the organisation of the second edition of Wiki Loves Monments in Malta, following the successful first edition carried out in 2016. The grant amount will be used for multiple purposes, ranging from awards for winners, to promotional material related to the contest and a small exhibition promoting the entries to the contest. The purpose of organising the contest in Malta is to further encourage the documentation of Malta's vast built cultural heritage as well as to further develop outreach and the uptake of Wiki platforms by local communities and cultural practitioners.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

The contest will focus on Malta's extensive built cultural heritage, which consists of over 2,400 sites according to the the National Inventory of Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands, ranging from megalithic temples to sites of religious, cultural and architectural value. Although this heritage is central to Malta's economic and social development, much of it remains greatly under-documented across Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. It is important for this issue to be addressed, particularly as Valletta (itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site) will be hosting the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018. 2018 has also been selected as the European Year of Cultural Heritage, thereby representing an additional incentive to ensure that Malta's built cultural heritage is thoroughly documented and freely available to all. This contest will seek to continue addressing this issue building upon the success of the first edition of Wiki Loves Monuments held in Malta in 2016.

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

The contest will be promoted through multiple channels, listed below:

1. Central Notice across Wikimedia projects;
2. Social media, including Facebook and Twitter posts;
3. Outreach activities (including workshops and photowalks);
4. Collaboration with local cultural organisations, most prominently Spazju Kreattiv, Malta's National Centre for Creativity which is our main collaborator on Wiki Loves Monuments 2017. Spazju Kreattiv will be promoting the contest through their own media channels, as well as through complementary activities (please see question 5 for more details);
5. National Media coverage, including television and print media coverage

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?

The jury will select winning photographs based upon the following criteria (in no particular order):

1. Technical/aesthetic quality of photograph (composition, lighting etc.);
2. Heritage value of subject;
3. Usefulness of image for Wikipedia.

The jury will be composed of five members, including photographers, heritage experts and an international Wikimedian. Prizes will be awarded to the top ten ranked photographs, as well as to the individual who has contributed the greatest number of entries to the contest.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

Following the end of the contest, a series of workshops and editathons will be carried out to integrate as many of the entries as possible into existing Wikipedia articles.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

As part of our ongoing collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv, Malta's National Centre for Creativity, an exhibition consisting of screens displaying entries submitted to the contest will be set up at the Centre (located in a prominent area of Valletta) throughout the month of September. Following the end of the contest, another exhibition will be set up at the same Centre in November, displaying prints of the top ten entries and digital presentations of all photos submitted. These activities will help further promote the contest, engage new audiences and give prominence to the value of documenting cultural heritage through Wikimedia Commons.

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We are a core organising team of 3 persons:

This team will be responsible for the planning, logistics, communication and administration of the contest.

We have the full support of Spazju Kreattiv who are collaborators on the project. They will be providing support in kind, providing us with space in which to host activities related to the contest (workshops, editathons and exhibitions) as well as audio-visual and technical equipment to carry out these activities.

We are working on obtaining in-kind support from other local organisations and commercial outlets, following a similar strategy employed during the 2016 edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Malta (where a prominent local photography outlet provided in-kind support and printing of winning entries).

• Wiki Loves Monuments is an important tool for getting people to engage with Wikimedia and to document built heritage. Being able to give prizes gives further incentive for people to take part. The plans for the competition are focused and realistic. Supporting promotional materials and catering costs for events would been a significant boon; the fact that support in-kind has been secured gives excellent value for the grant. • Through similar projects awareness is raised about Malta's vast and rich built heritage. This will, hopefully, help stall the fast paced urban development currently taking place at the cost of such built (and natural) heritage. Vanessa Ciantar (talk) 05:01, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
