Wikipedia Connection is a student organization at Ohio State University. Last semester, we received a grant for our Spring 2016 activities. We are now requesting funds for the coming Fall 2016 semester to continue our workshops, edit-a-thons, outreach, and more.

Project GoalEdit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

Continuing off of our last semester's work, the funding will go towards weekly workshops, edit-a-thons, and other events that connect Ohio State's students and faculty to Wikipedia. The result of this semester-long project is expected to be:
  • Editors: Introducing Ohio State students to editing Wikipedia and supporting existing ones.
  • Content: Producing content for Wikipedia through weekly workshops, edit-a-thons, collaborations, and photography sessions.
  • Education: Educating students and staff about Wikipedia: how it works, how to edit, its reliability, etc.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

As we've done over the last two academic semesters (see Spring 2016 report), our student organizers will run a series of events and programs through the Fall 2016 semester at Ohio State. Our events this semester include edit-a-thons; weekly workshops; participating in a photo campaign; and GLAM outreach. We also work closely with Ohio State's University Library.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

Our main audience is the Ohio State University community. We engage and promote our activities in the following ways:
  • Participating in campus involvement fairs.
  • Posting flyers around campus.
  • E-mailing various Ohio State University listservs.
  • E-mailing our own mailing list of subscribers.
  • Working with Ohio State professors and faculty to promote our events to students (word of mouth, extra credit opportunities, etc.)
  • Collaborating with other University organizations and departments, as well as other Columbus-area organizations to raise awareness of ours events.
  • Promoting via social media (Facebook and Twitter)

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

Through all our events, we aim to educate and teach students on how to edit Wikipedia, as well as teaching them more about how Wikipedia functions, its value, and its opportunities. These also apply to faculty we may work with. Our efforts will also result in content creation, both on Wikipedia and on the Wikimedia Commons.
Our organization has a mailing list, as well as social media. We track students involved with our projects through a Course page, and offer help (both in-person and online) to any participants that need it.


How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of total participants: 40, through all our events
  2. Number of articles created or improved (if applicable): 75, primarily through edit-a-thons and weekly workshops
  3. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 100, primarily through our participation in Wiki Loves Monuments
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 30, primarily through our participation in Wiki Loves Monuments


What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Wikipedia Connection has six student officers, along with two faculty advisors from the University. The student officers consist of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and three board members. Working with Ohio State faculty, the officers organize the events and manage expenses.
Wikipedia Connection has $310.13 in funds left over from the previous two semesters. These funds will be applied to the coming semester.
Wikipedia Connection also has some Ohio State University resources available for use:
  • Additional funding may be provided by the Ohio State University in three forms, which will be applied and used as the priority source)
    • Operating funds, which are used for general operation of the organization in the year (up to $200). These funds are limited to use in the following category:
      • Advertising/Promotion/Printing
      • Bank Charges
      • Books/Subscriptions
      • Dues/Fees
      • Equipment/Facility Rental
      • Food (recruitment or marketing events only)
      • Membership Awards
      • Office/Consumable Supplies
      • Travel/Transportation
    • Programming funds, which are used to host programs and events on campus. We will be using these funds to host one of our two planned edit-a-thons this semester.
    • Resource room funds, which is a free $250 allocation given per year for student organizations to use on resources such as printing, signage, and balloons.

This rise from last semester is due to a rise in attendance. Each workshop includes food (usually pizza), snacks, refreshments, and tableware.

GLAM Meetings Food and beverages $40 Wikipedia Connection is going to start a GLAM initiative on-campus; these funds will go towards light snacks and beverages for when we host meetings with local institutions regarding GLAM.
Advertising Social media advertisement on Facebook $50 Facebook advertising will be used to raise targeted awareness about our club and our events.
General Unforeseen costs $80 Funds to cover unforeseen costs, such as unexpected need for extra supplies or food
