Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikimedians of Cameroon User Group/Editathons 2017/Report

Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2016-17 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? The objectives were partially achieved.

  • We had 7 events
  • Participants varied between 9 and 20 per session
  • In all, we had 26 new editors
  • About twelve articles created and modified with over 200 photographs of women and Cameroonian authorities collected
  • More than 20 new categories have been created or completed in Wikimedia Commons

Due to some inconvenience, it could have been said that the sessions were not well run : cancellation of training at Ngaoundere, power cuts. However, satisfaction is great : all sessions allowed to develop small projects to make participants more active, a partnership has been formed with the Cameroon Women's Scholarship Alumni, which would like to be more operational.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
5 events 7 events The two sessions scheduled at the Goethe Institute in Yaoundé were held with the members of the User Group. Two sessions were planned with the Cameroon Women's Scholarship Alumni Association at Yaoundé, whose members come from Yaoundé, Douala, Buea and Bamenda.

Due to power cuts, we have planned a (practical) session for residents in Yaoundé and another for residents in Douala and Buea. Another is scheduled in Douala on 9 September 2017 with the members of the User Group.

50 new editors 26 new editors The two trainings at Ngaoundéré, which should gather more than 50 participants, were canceled because the students were on the eve of the academic year-end exams. The return is only scheduled for October.

The Goethe sessions at Yaoundé and Douala are training sessions for the members of the User Group. We had a new editor at the Goethe; the rest coming from the sessions with the association CWS.

50 articles created or improved More than 20 created or illustrated in Wikipedia Practical sessions were reduced; however, we have been thinking about setting up small projects in the future to produce more content and give participants the opportunity to be more active.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Support and motivation of participants who want to be more active.
    • All were present at all sessions despite the postponements
    • A partnership was established with the CWS association for the Wiki Loves Women project
    • Three proposals project were selected to give participants the opportunity to develop their skills.
  • What did not work so well?

The cancellation of the Ngaoundéré sessions, the power cuts at Yaounde and Buea prevented us from doing much practice. The delay in validating the rapid grant and the bank transfer (about 1 month) forced us to delay the planned schedule.

  • What would you do differently next time?
    • For training outside the Goethe Institute, allow the rental of a generator
    • Encourage proposals project to keep participants active
    • Anticipate in the submission of the rapid grant
    • Equip the User Group with a video projector
